My P38 1995 DSE does not have a working trip computer. When you press either of the buttons on the stalk nothing happens.
  • Pressing it does not change any display.
  • High beam works.
  • Indicator works.
  • Display Dimmer on the stalk works.
Can anyone suggest any checks other than replacing the stalk. It may be that but if I can check or count out other things first I would like to.
  • Is it fused?
  • Does it have sensors that could be checked?
  • Can a continuity check be done for worn out buttons?
  • Can just the buttons be replaced?
My concern is that NOTHING happens when pressed... even repeatedly!!!

Thoughts?

I bought it last week! Hard to testify to the operation over 10 years in someone elses ownership.

It is not a DT.

Any helpful comments?:)

Does nobody really know how the trip computer works?

Please help. I am about to spend a fortune at main dealer!!!!

Hi

What kind of trip computer is it? Is it the same/similar to the one found in the Jaguar which works our mpg/mph/average mpg/ temp of fuel etc or is it the simple one found in the speedo below the needle the 4 digit one? Is it genuine landrover or aftermarket. It may have a code like a radio. What happens when the car is on? Does it light up at least ? If not then it's either locked down or disconnected at the fuse box.

If so you may have a gearbox sender/axle sender covered in gunge which needs a good clean?

At a guess there will be a fuse/relay there somewhere in the system. Try removing it and following the wires to see if one links to a relay or relay connected wire.

Also DON'T waste you're money at a Landrover Dealer use a small specialist they're cheaper and they care about you're car Land Rover Dealers don't they care about you're money. (£75ph +VAT is what I got quoted Friday at LR Norwich thankfully I'm VAT Exempt)

In short the computer is going to have either and air pressure sender or an axle/gearbox mounted on, it might even be ECU controlled (But i doubt it)
get under the car with a light and see what you can find it might be integral with the speed on on the back chassis mount.

You could unplug the stalk at the column, get a multi meter and check for live wires and or resistance (have the plug half in so you get access to the plug's and run through lights to eliminate them on the tests.)

Hope this helps in some manner

Many thanks.

I will get crawling under it!

It is the factory fitted one, it displays on the message board on the dash. My 4.0 Had it as well. I think they all have it.

I have searched wiring diagrams and have found nothing!

Much appreciated!
