May not be the appropriate location for this thread but I was unsure where to post it. So the disco 1 has a various choice of configurations.
We got the 200/300tdi auto/manual and the v8 auto/manual.
Any idea what it would cost to run a v8 on LPG and what configuration would be best suited for a 17yr olds first car ? Some say the v8's are dirt cheap but I am confused why. Surely the v8's must be faster than the tdi's ?
Any advice is much appreciated, many thanks. Matt

Dirt cheap in what way? On insurance or just the asking price? I can believe them being cheaper to buy due to them having a drink problem (don't get me wrong, I love V8 engined vehicles of any kind ) so no one wants to run them in the current economic climate.

Is LPG that much cheaper than unleaded these days??

As a first car to any young driver who hasn't got a disability, I would always suggest one with a manual transmission: Learn to drive in a manual transmission and you can drive anything. Learn in an auto (and pass your test in an auto) and you're not allowed to drive a manual. :(

Isn't the manual better on fuel economy anyway (not by much)

V8s might be faster than tdi's, but Land Rovers aren't known for being boy racer specials and to a degree, the insurance rates reflect that.

Diff.

Cheer diff, I believe LPG is cheaper than unleaded and yeah people are saying the v8 discos are cheap than the tdi on insurance for some reason. I do love v8's however it's back to the old story of a tdi being virtually bullet proof and the deep water doesn't seem to affect them where as a v8 may well require more maintenance and water is an issue with them

I think insurance is going to be mega expensive, I'm 21 with 4 years driving and 2ncb and it's still close to £1k a year on a 200tdi. God knows what it will be at 17.
At 18 I was a named driver for £1500 but I think that insurers have grown wise to this and still want big bucks.
Good luck though

I got quoted £4000 fully comp on a 300tdi that was on my own insurance policy (not a named driver)
I then got quoted £2000 for a 998cc austin mini.
Either way if I'm a named driver on my 52 yr old dads insurance it should drop the price a fair bit. Really do want a landy as a first car

52yr old dad and 17yr old son on (potentially) a V8 Land Rover insurance? Speaking as someone who used to sell insurance I would be surprised if the underwriter didn't pick up on that one straight away and either whack a restriction of some kind on it, refuse it or hike the premium up big style.

Just remember this: if you get insurance in this way at the very least either be honest about any mods to the vehicle or don't mod it/buy a modded one. They will be watching your policy like a hawk and if you have any kind of claim and your vehicle doesn't match the way they have it on their system your policy will be void and the insurer will then be able to choose between charging you through the nose for it or simply saying you have been insured under false pretenses meaning you have effectively been driving uninsured - not good if you got into an accident with someone else.

That's just my advice though, take it or leave it, at the end of the day we all get to choose the risks we take ;)

Hi,

Having had a 300 tdi and currently got a v8 on LPG in my experience the insurance cost was the same for both. Fuel wise they are pretty much the same to run. The v8 is faster and IMO a nicer drive on the road.

Having looked at many i did find that most of he v8's I looked at appeared to be in better condition, perhaps more road orientated owners from new?

But I have come to the conclusion that if the v8 dies I will stick a 300 tdi in it rather than spend lots of money on rebuilding the v8.

Lordwolf: yeah I do see what your saying, either way though if its a tdi or v8 they will be suspicious
Nfwilliams: if I could insure a v8 for the same price as a tdi that would be my choice no matter what. But I also see where your coming from when you say you'd put a 300 tdi I'm it if your v8 died. It is a tough choice to make to be honest, would the novelty of a v8 wear off after a few months? Or would I want a v8 if I had a tdi

In my experience the V8 is better to drive, and on LPG uses twice as much of a fuel that costs half the price of diesel, so fuel costs are about the same. The main problem I found is the size of the LPG tank, and where to put it, if you want a reasonable range between fill ups. There is the advantage of in effect having two fuel supplies on board.
I recall going on holiday when there was a national petrol shortage. We could get plenty of LPG, and were the only people in the hotel who could go touring round. The rest had to save their petrol to get back home.

I was expecting the v8 to be a lot better on the road. Think it'd have to be a manual so it wouldn't slow down on the hills so much. Just wondering weather a v8 or tdi would pull the bigger tyres better. Would love a v8 just really don't understand how they can be the same on insurance as a tdi.
