I would advise you avoid Iran and afghan! Even if it adds a few K kilometres, it's better than the **** that can happen in either of them 2 countries.

The prob with Afghan is that there are so many mines its not worth the risk.

the ground is so vast out that any the russians couldnt cover with troops they mined/cluster bombed........A mine is the best soldier, needs no rest food,water......just sits and waits as long as it needs. 1month-40years if the detonators are in good nick.

AVOID.

I work in the security industry in the Middle East at the moment, for what its worth:

Iran, not too much of a problem, the Iranian people are in general friendly, curious and hospitable of foreigners, be very careful of the military and revolutionary guards, you stray too near a military installation or photograph something you shouldnt, then you make the leap from curious foreigner to spy in one easy, bound. Google American Tourists in Iraq Arrested by Iranian Troops on Border. They were arrested in 2009, some are still in Iran

American Tourists in Iraq Arrested by Iranian Troops on Border - International News | News of the World | Middle East News | Europe News - FOXNews.com

Also if tension is high between the West and Iran over the Iranian Nuke project you could find yourself in a world of **** if theyre stirring up the people against the west. Not sure what the entry requirements are, as when I was there I was working and it was sorted for me, but it was a while ago

Pakistan - The parts you're planning on going...I wouldn't, Taliban influence is growing the government are slowly losing control, there is a defacto war for control of the regions, the central government have given up trying to impose rule in some parts. Coupled with the mass escape from the prison in Kandehar, the Pakistan tribal region will be flooded with fugitives from that. They are 100% hard line taliban. Google Daniel Pearl if you want to have an idea of what theyre like.

FCO are advising against non-essential travel to Pakistan, again couldn't tell you about tourist visa, i had a working one sorted by my company.

Afghanistan - Forget it, you will just disappear, Afghanistan has had countless American Bounty hunters, thinking they'll get rich by finding Osama, they just disappear, its a regular event. The main route from Pakistan through into
Afghanistan is one of the most dangerous bits of road in the world, the military supply convoys are hit multiple times, they have little to no aircover. You will be mistaken for a western PSD by the Taliban, or Taliban by Nato, not forgetting the amount of unexploded ordnance about the place, or the tribesmen, just taking a liking to your vehicle and selling you to the Taliban.

Add to that the fact that its very difficult to get a Visa into Afghanistan at the moment as Kharzai is trying to put the squeeze on foreign security contractors and companies.

Afghanistan/Tribal Pakistan isn't a case of "cohones" but really stupidity, and putting the guys who might have to look for you at risk, except there wont be many people looking for you.

Like the Australian tourist we found in Basrah 05, he wanted an adventure, he got one when the vehicle he was in was EFP'ed on the way to the COB.

Hanoverian,

I was in Kabul/Gardez 2004-2005 for a year working as a PMC Luckily I had free range and could drive down town unlike many Dyn or other American/UK based guys that were strictly on Camp. Every day or 2 I would be either driving down from Gardez to Kabul with a Gurkha or I was down town in Gardez getting stuff supplies. The poeple on camp were very unhappy that I cwas allowed to go as i please. I was in a normal hylux not a F350 Dually and I was covered up only had my papers a get out bag and my weapons.

If you have a forign or different looking car you are a serious target. Keep invisible and remember you have to be lucky every hour of every day they only have to be lucky ONCE!

Full marks for your low profile, not something I've done we're mostly med profile, around Kabul. Was just trying to get my point over, couldn't care less if someone does something stupid as long as they make an informed decision, I just get ****ed when they expect someone to come for them.

Hey mate,

where's your sense of adventure?! Afghanistan and Pakistan!

Just dress like one o' those Arab berbers and you'll be fine.... hahahah

Imagine having done that trip for real about 2 weeks ago and coincidentally swinging through Pakistan on your journey and coincidentally you stop for a rest outside Osama's infamous white compoiund and you find your tyres could do with a bit more air, so off you go and knock on his door and say "Hay gday mate, you got a foot pump I could borrow for my car?" The response would probably be like, "no no foot pump but i got action pump or pump action, which one do you want?!" ~ HAHA

I agree if your over there for whatever reason and somthing goes wrong. You fecked up! Nobody will come for you. TBH if you do not know how these kind of countries roll its not a place to be visiting.

Afghanistan has some of the best views I have ever seen and I will never forget them. I won't be driving back over there to see them in a hurry not unless another good job comes up which isn't going to happen any time soon.
