Morning all,

Picked up the Defender last night off my Uncle who has been using it to lug gear around the last few weeks.

I was planning this week to change all the transmission oils over to fully synthetic oils.

A whine has developed which is directly proportional to the output speed of the gearbox.

If I knock the transfer box into neutral at speed the whine goes.

If I put the transfer box into neutral and the gearbox into gear you can hear the whine.

Any clues to what it might be? Is it likely to be an easy fix?

I suspect there's a bearing around the output shaft of the gearbox or input shaft of the transfer box? I suspect it's likely to be one of them that has failed.
