Making a bit of progress with my '79 SWB rebuild at the moment, but I have a few questions I'd like the collective's opinion on, if I may...

1. I'm overhauling the transmission brake, and the shoes are really oily. So I figure I need to renew the output oil seal from the gearbox. Is it necessary to remove the speedo drive housing to do this? The book seems to suggest it is. Any tricks I should be aware of to get to this easily? Or is it just trivial to remove the housing?

2. If I need to remove the speedo drive housing, is there a gasket as well as the shims where it mates with the transfer box?

3. Should the speedo cable be routed over the top of the gearbox on its way under the bulkhead, or should it go underneath? Any particular path it's supposed to follow or channels it should be routed through? I with I'd taken more photos of this before I removed it!

4. The rear lower edge of the fuel tank (side-mounted) is fouling on the rear spring pick-up point. It's only a few mm, but it's stopping the bolt lining up properly, so I'm wondering if I should file the rear mounting hole to extend it sideways a little. Is this normal?

5. I'm also a little confused by how the rear mounting bolt and washers is supposed to be arranged, as the Parts Book doesn't quite match up with the Brtipart mounting kit I got! I assume the stepped bolt is stacked up something like:
Bolthead
(Washer?)
Outrigger
Rubber bush
Fuel tank bracket
Rubber bush
Rectangular metal plate with turned over edge - is the edge supposed to point up and interlock with the fuel tank bracket?
Spring washer
Nut

The kit also contains a large penny washer that looks like it's supposed to maybe fit between the outrigger and the top rubber bush, but the hole is too small to fit over the upper part of the bolt. So is it supposed to go between the rectangular plate and spring washer? Or instead of the plate (which wasn't in the kit)? Or have they put the wrong size washer in my kit?

Thanks all,
Adam

1.No need to remove speedo drive, just make sure the drive flange land is smooth when you renew seal.
3.Over the top.
4. Grind a bit off the tank bracket or you will vibration noise with it and chassis. [ many pattern parts need a bit of fettling. ]
5. Can't remember the order but yours seams right.

OK, thank you, @tottot .

1. OK, assuming I can get the old one out, that should make things a little easier.
3. Thanks. Really annoyed that none of my photos show it, which made me think maybe it was supposed to run underneath. I guess I disconnected it before I took the photos.
4. The annoying thing is the tank is the old one off the previous chassis, so I guess it's the new Richards chassis that's slightly different. I was worried that if I let the tank sit slightly further out, it'll foul on the bodywork, instead, but hopefully I have a few mm to spare.
5. Probably doesn't matter that much. Seems a very complicated arrangement for a simple fixing!

I cleaned my handbrake shoes by soaking them in paraffin to get the oil out then a good soak in brake cleaner.....they came up like new.

Aaah, thanks. I don't recall there being a clip there, but I'll fit one if there isn't. I was going to bring it around a bit tighter and run it along the right hand side of the gearbox, but a more gentle bend and over the top of the bell housing is probably a better idea. :D
