Can anyone answer this question for me please. I haven't got time to change the transfer gearbox oil and wondering if it is even functional when I am only using the main gearbox? This would really save me some time under the car. I can only work if the weatHer is good.

Thanks in advance.

I think you are a little confused as to how your transmission works!!
Your transfer box is working ALL the time your gearbox is working so you need to change the oil in it.

Hope that helps

Damn. Best get to it then. I am soooo going to die of cold. Thank you so much for the info both of you.

It's a pain even when the sun is shining both drain and fill plugs under the centre of the vehicle, fill is not easy to reach and the vehicle must be kept on the level.

I just have to man up and get it done. Did you just use a 1/2 inch breaker bar to undo the drain or is there a special socket? I cackle myself that it will snap off when I try to get it out. The filler on the main gear box was all chewed up before I even got to it first time round.

I thought the transfer box was relating to the hi -lo small gear stick. I will read up on it tonight.
Changing the oil in the transfer box should improve the economy and power too the?

I don't think it will do much for your power or economy, But it will help the transfer box no end if it hasn't been done for a long while.

Just a little tip, DO NOT drain out the oil until you know you can remove the fill plug.

That's is 1/2 inch bar to crack the plug seal then a socket ratchet to undo.
Did my last summer, my first time ever :)

Filling it up is made easier with one of these pumps from halfrauds

I just ran the car and yes it runs a lot better with the two oil changes on the main gearbox. There is the occasional grate when the first gear goes in and just wondering will the transfer
box oil change help?
