I need to replace the top front seal in the transfer case of my 2001 TD5 Auto Disco.
This is a job I have been putting off for some time now, but I really just need to get it sorted.
My understanding is that I need to remove the transfer case to do this, however, I recently found a mention in a post on this forum that it was possible to replace this seal without having to actually remove the case.
Is there anyone on the group who can give me a difinitive answer on this?
Thanks ....Dave

you just need to remove prop and then flange seal will prise out and new tap back in ,grease inside of seal careful to keep outside of seal clean ,grease helps to hold garter spring in place whilst new seals is tapped home

in which case you definitley cant swap the seal without removing box , though its worth checking intermediate shaft for the leak once box is off,9 times out of 10 its the leak not the seal

sometimes in the worse cases, sometimes you just need a new o ring and apply plenty of sealant box side of o ring so it is spread over o ring as shaft is pulled through

thanks james,
I'll give it a go and see what happens.... can only be better than it currently is ... I think :)
My main concern would be in lining up the shaft again during reinstallation if the housing is worn (oval shaped)... I've heard of a few people having this problem
