Hi all, I'm off to see a disco tomorrow with a knackered transfer box so a few quick questions

What's a fair price for a second hand tbox for a 300 tdi?

What else should I be looking for if the tbox is shot?

What is a rough time to fit a replacement on my drive? I change my clutch on my 110 on my own on my drive in a day. Similar type of job and time?

Anything else I should change while it's off?

What's a fair price for a second hand tbox for a 300 tdi? anything from £50-150, I paid £70 for a 1.4 ratio
What else should I be looking for if the tbox is shot? depends whats up with it, play in diffs, gear box etc..my transfer box bearing went and took gear box out with it

What is a rough time to fit a replacement on my drive? I change my clutch on my 110 on my own on my drive in a day. Similar type of job and time? depends how your doing it, can be done leaving gbox on car but its a biog lup on your back and if you miss align the spline putting it back on you nacker the seal up...ask me how I know

Anything else I should change while it's off? check prop UJ's, possibly worth doing seal kit and possibly input bearing on new box

You might be lucky and its just the linkage playing up.

Excuse my ignorance but what linkage? I've been told that It will select all gears fine but when driven it revs higher and sounds like its Grindy and like something is about to fall out. I know one of the props had been replaced recently.

I've managed to get a second hand tbox and gbox for 150 and a mechanic friend said I can use his ramps and transmission jack and he will help for a day for 150 squid so for that kind of money i might just change everything and save splitting the two boxes and save all the arse ache. Will check over the original box and if tidy put it on fleebay.

If it revving high then it sounds like its in low range, this is not a slur on your knowledge, do you understand HI and Low ratio and diff lock.
 
Been to pick up the car and the tbox has imploded taking the gearbox with it! When I took the inspection cover off to check the gearbox splines I discovered the tbox gear only had 2 teeth left and I needed a bucket and spade for the swarf! With the gear out of the tbox I went through the gears with a friend watchingthe gbox shaft was spspinning. It went into all gears except 4th and reverse so I'm going to just change the pair together! I've taken a photo but I can't upload it fromy phone sorry guys!

No worries, it was reving higher because there were no teeth left on the gears in the t box so when reved it was best part of spinning freely with little to no power transferred to the wheels :mad:
