I have a 98 defender and have problems with transfer box jumping out of low range under load or when decelerating. It feels like its going in fine with the lever. theres no apparent noise. Maybe whines a bit slowing down when its hot but nothing major. Today i changed the oil which was previously changed 2 months ago. On the drain plug there was a reasonable amount of metal filings. Doesnt seem right to me. Has anyone had this problem and what was the cause.

I have had (& still have) this problem. It's never been perfect.

Things I've done and it's made it better:
. Make sure there is no crap around the linkage underneath. You only need a small amount of mud on the surface of the TBox where the level gets pushed against to stop it going all the way.
. Make sure your plastic bushes are in the connections of the linkage. This will mean that when you push the lever to Low, all of the travel goes into the TBox lever.
. I filed the metal gate that bolts around the high/low stick in the car, allowing me to push it max forward.
. you can adjust the system a lot by two 13mm nuts on the arm.
. Fit some bungie...

It's much better than it ever was. But it still needs help to stay put on some occasions.

Anyone else?

When I change into high, I have to make sure I'm in a gear (1st or 2nd) and let the clutch out a little as I engage high, whist I hold the stick firmly in the high position. This sort of 'pulls' it into gear. If I don't do that, it will pop out of gear at some point on the transfer box whilst I'm driving. Maybe you could try that for low.

Sounds a bit drastic to be honest! I never force mine into gear, it sort of pulls itself in if I give it a gentle push as I release the clutch a little. Mine probably needs some adjustment in the linkage but I'm saving that for when I swap out the transfer box.

its probably me taking out the frustration of the constantly slipping low range lever that has built over the last 2 years. I will try and be gentle and see if it's learnt it's lesson.
