Hi,

I have 97 P38 4.0SE. I believe I have a traction control problem but not sure where to start. I went out laning the other week and got stuck. I did manage to get out in the end, which was nice. lol

I noticed that both the n/s/f & n/s/r wheels were spining and I was going no where forwards, the ground clearance wasn't enough for this lane and the diff was dragging which is why I eventually got stuck, so I had to reverse out of the lane and choose another to play on being more carefull of how deep the ruts were.

I have no errors on the message centre relating to traction failure and after reading a few posts and the RAVE manual I took note one morning that I don't even see the TC light come on when switching the car on. ABS lights all work fine and kicks in when needed. Any ideas where to start looking would be most welcome.

Thanks

Not sure the SE had Traction control....but I could be wrong....if it did it would be 2 wheel (rear) in 1997...4 wheel came in 99 onwards I think....(but again I could be wrong)

The TC works by breaking the spinning wheel to send drive to the one with traction...so with rear wheel traction control, the spinning wheel (your o/s/r) would be braked and the traction sent to the n/s/r but when that lost traction it too started spinning....the system then gets confused as it will try to brake that wheel to stop it spinning, then it releases the first wheel till that spins...then you get stuck cos both wheels have no traction andthe poor system is trying to sort out which wheel to brake and when....the system is pretty stupid TBH.

As Saint said, it is very probable that you don't have TC. If the TC light doesn't light up on ignition cycle, it is either non existent or burnt. The only way you could be sure is to check the part number on the brake booster (usually engraved on the front side of the booster unit under the piping). Check it and do a search of the part number on here.

Thankyou, wasn't aware that they had a model which this wasn't fitted to. Does anyone know if this can be converted or upgraded at all. I can understand that a replacement ABS unit and ECU may be required but wondered if there much else to be done, if it is at all possible.

Believe it has been done by some and in theory you're right, ABS ECU + modulator to be swapped. But from what I remember reading, it can get a bit temperamental afterwards although I don't remember why. Maybe the BECM doesn't approve or something. Pretty sure I read all this somewhere in this forum. A search should help.

I checked the part number on the front of the unit and it shows as a WABCO ANR2238, didn't find anything on here that helped after a search for it. Is this correct, am I looking in the wrong place, does anyone know if this is or is not a TC able unit.?

ANR2238 is ABS only (in other words "no traction control").
You could change the modulator for a two wheel TC - one and a matching ABS/TC ECU. Was thinking about this but just couldn't justify the time/money yet.

Hi,

I have a '96 P38 DSE with the same modulator (ANR2238).

However, my ABS ECU is ANR4889 wich is supposed to be a TC one.

Would swapping to this one work ?

I've seen in the faultmate manual that there is a option to enable/disable TC. Will I have to enable it manually after replacing.

Regards
