Where is your transmission to cope with the torque?....;))
Note that even the stock Toyota 5sp wasn't happy behind that engine, the
automatic transmission was a much better choice (but not available in
Europe).
(same auto as in later J8-series).

I have seen a 1HD-T in a Defender myself once, but under repair, at a shop,
electrical problems (of course).

12H-T has the benefit over a 1HD-T for having a (engine-oil-lubricated) line
pump for injection, instead of a more vulnerable fuel-lubricated rotary pump.
(but you can even stall an 1HD-T on (accidental) gasoline, including frequent
restarts, without damage....)

Dear w-j (for short!)
Thanks for your interest, good to know there's some expertise out
there.
My thinking on the transmission was to go with standard but you say the
original box was not up to the torque and I'd like to raise this a
little anyway. I certainly don't think Land Rover make anything
suitable although maybe ZF do? I'd like to go auto to mitigate fatigue
and I go with Tom Sheppard (Vehicle Dependant Expedition Guide) who has
mega experience of Sahara.
When you say not available in Europe, which markets was/is this auto
box used in; US,Japan, Third World?
You're obviously a fan of this engine and I like what you say about
the fuel pump, p'raps you could let me know a few more plus and minus
points?
Hope to hear back from you soon,
Thanks again,
Bud

The box itself was used in several models, even generations, like all J6 &
early J8 in the USA.
Very strong box, claimed to be stronger than nearly everything available
from the USA, even coping with turbo'd 1FZ-FE gasolines in J8.

Other than the stock 5sp transmission, there is not much to complain about,
other than that the later 1HD-(F)T(E) is even more fun to drive, especially
when intercooled....more power, more rpm, more responsive (but rotary
pump).
(this also in the context that *if* you find this J6/J8 auto transmission,
you might as well put the most powerfull TLC-diesel in front of it....;))

Normally I would also point you to the Diesel Toyota Land Cruiser
Mailinglist, but that one has been disfunctional for more than a
year....still trying to find out whether any of the admins back then plans
to revive it any time soon, otherwise I will do it myself.

Oh, remember that this 12H-T exists in both 12 volt (Australia) and 24 volt
(Japan/Europe).
(J8/1HD-(F)T(E) was either 12v or a mixed 12v-alternator/-system & 24v-
start-circuit, so no problem when sourcing the transmission from a J8 (but
Japan had auto-J6 and 24v, so that one might still cause problems))
