Licences held from 1 January 1997

If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can:

drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or#3,500kgMAM#towing a trailer of up to#750kg#MAMtow a trailer over#750kg#MAM#as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than#3,500kg

For anything heavier you need to take acategory B+E driving test.

Re reading for the millionth time for a cat b licence.....

Vehicle upto 3500 kg MAM towing trailer 750kg MAM or a larger trailer than 750kg MAM trailer so long as the combined weight (NOT MAM) is less than 3500kg.

So I think I was wrong.....assuming a 90 with some kit in is about 2000kg you can tow up to 1500kg approx.

The licence regs changed again in 2013 just to make it more complicated

The 2013 change for cat b is the larger than 750kg MAM trailer has to have a total MAM of vehicle plus trailer of less than 3500kg MAM.

SO.......after 97, combined actual WEIGHT of less than 3500kg

After 2013, combined MAM (max possible whether loaded or not) of 3500kg

So is that what we were talking about yesterday? I passed in 2006 and have b+e

My van loaded (weighed the other day) 2400kg grossed at 2600kg means when I hitch my caravan up with a mam of 950 the actual train weight 3350kg so under my 3500 max train weight my van is permitted to tow,

but my max gross weight of my van 2600 kg + the mam of my caravan 950kg giving a combined plate mam of 3550, I'm expecting an email back from vosa re this at some point

I'd be very interested in the reply but yes as far as I understand reading and re reading post 97 and pre 2013 cat b so long as your ACTUAL train weight is less than 3500kg your ok .

Post 13 cat b the combined MAM has to be less than 3500kg .

You can have a combined MAM of 4250kg so long as the trailer is no more than 750kg MAM (vehicle 3500kg MAM) just to confuse things further.

It's difficult to imagine how they could have made it more complicated.

Just moved the caravan from a mates house to a lock up, that 1 ton and it was no different to what it used to be the hitch wasn't to high neither

If you have B+E on your driving licence, then you can tow any vehicle and trailer combination up to the max train weight of your landy. The max gross weight of your 90 is around 2400kg iirc, with a max towing weight of 3500kg this gives a max train weight of 5900kg.

EDIT; Just realised you posted max GVW at 2600kg, this gives a max train weight of 6100kg

I have my b+e and tow with the 90 as I have done tonight, we went a bit off topic as I was asking about my transit van which has a max train weight of 3500 and a gross weight of 2600, and could I tow an empty 3.5t trailer behind it.

I spoke with a local dvsa enforcement officer (vosa)

He said if they pull me over in my van they will check the weights and so long as the trailer is not over loaded or the van, and my van train weight is under the maximum train weight of 3.5t then the rest is irrelevant, ie I can tow an empty 16ft Ifor, I'm waiting for an email to have all this in writing.

Ahh, sorry, I thought you were talking about your 90. What sort of Transit do you have? 3500kg max train weight sounds a bit poor. Sarah's 1.8 Gaylander has a higher train weight than that.

Just to add to the mind#### of it all, vosa would weigh each axle as you crawl across a weigh plate, so the nose weight on the tow bar would add to the tow vehicle rear axle weight

I have a 2010 transit swb low roof 115ps 260 trend, the wife uses a RAV4 for the stables and that can tow more the transit is a true wimp in the towing race,

I'm lucky tho, when I need to tow my 90 on a trailer of we are going to a pay and play far away I can use my dads discovery 4
