Hi ,i have a 90 300 tdi and looking to service it , am looking to by a tool kit , anybody know one that does not cost a arm and leg that fits the bill ? i have never serviced a engine before but have retired now so money a bit tight.

Very few tools need to service a 300tdi, spanner for sump bung i just use an adjustable, decent size grips or filter strap for the oil filter, same for fuel filter, 8mm spanner for rocker cover bolts, 13mm spanner for tappet adjuster locknuts and a flat screwdriver to turn the tappet adjusters.
Big adjustable to remove the gearbox drain and plug and a torx for the level plug, sorry cant remember the size!
I/2 inch drive extension and ratchet to get the transfer and diff level drain bungs out and thats about it
Take the new filters to halfords so you get the right size grip/filter strap, some of the filter straps are total ****, the wider the strap the better they are
Basically nothing unusual or special.

For me, i've got a fairly cheap, 'tool set', can't remember from where now, but has set of screwdrivers, pliers, socket set and spanners, nothing special. Pretty much covers everything you need. Early needed extras I got that I can think of are a viscous fan spanner, the t55 mentioned above, square thingy for the diff plugs, 19mm spanner, circlip pliers, gease gun, torque wrench and of course a selection of hammers is essential.

Beyond that I think the list will grow as the jobs do. Electrical circuit tester, hub nut spanner, soldering iron, wielder and wielding tools, grinder, riveter, rounded off nut remover thingy,,,,, and on and on!:)
