As I ponder further whether to swap the P38 for an L322, I can't help but noticing how many L322s have hideous blacked out windows. Some even have it on the front side windows... As if they weren't drug dealerish enough, people go and do that to them too.....

So my question - can these tints be easily removed? It would greatly increase the number of vehicles for me to choose from if they can!!

Cheers,

Jerry

LOL

some were factory fitted so may not be removable.

mine were genuine factory partial green tinted when i first acquired my L322

Depends.

If it is factory fit tint, then it is privacy glass, so the tint is added during the moulding phase of the glass so cannot be removed. If it is the cheaper aftermarket tint, it is just film over the glass. You can tell the difference by looking at heat elements in the rear window, as it'll always have air pockets, or if you have access to the vehicle look at a corner on the inside and you'll see the edge of the film.

Tint on the front side windows is illegal, although will not fail an MoT Test for it, as tint is not tested on MoT Tests, so if the seller tells you "well it passed MoT with it" they are an idiot.

+1

Yet as an MOT tester (NT) I am expected to "sign off" a Police Rectification note when Front Side Tinted Windows were the rectification required

MOT Test Manual said:
K3 Role of the VTS

1. A VTS may be asked to verify that the faults have been rectified and to endorse the form, or to rectify the faults as well. If a vehicle is presented at a VTS that is not authorised to test that class of vehicle, the driver should be told to go to an appropriate station (unless the defects are absolutely straightforward, e.g. a light not working).

2. An NT should carry out the examination and once satisfied that all defects listed on the form (whether testable or not) have been properly rectified complete the appropriate section. If the NT cannot satisfy them self that the defects listed have been rectified they must not endorse the form. The NT need only be satisfied that the listed defects have been rectified; other faults that may be noted during the examination should be brought to the attention of the presenter.

3. To endorse the form you may keep using the former MOT embossing stamp as long as the details are still correct. If you don't have an embossing stamp or the details on your old stamp change then you may use any other embossing stamp or ordinary rubber stamp that includes business name and phone number. Ideally this should also include your VTS number but this can be added by hand if you don't have a stamp that includes it.

you are aloud tint on the front windows, but it cant be heavy black tint, something like its got to let at least 80% light in.

i didnt bother with my front ones, bloody dangerous in my opinion !

Most manufacturers fit a 28% front side window tint

This is because in the UK 30% is the maximum allowed (35% for pre 1st April 1985 vehicles)

So you add a "light smoke" 25% to an existing 28% OE tint and you get an apprx 53% tint = illegal

Also consider when the Dark Limo tint on rear screens it become obligatory to have a N/S as well as an O/S mirror but no centre windscreen mirror is needed
