Tint Or No Tint???

IMHO anything more that a middling tint says Film Star or kn*b. Combine that with the possible grief from insurance and possible police stops to check you are legal, against do you really really want it.

BTW, round where I live heavy tints usually means lowered Vauxhall Chevette with bangin' chewns comin' outa da mota, innit.

Which timewarp are you living in? I haven't seen a Chevette on the road in about 10 years, apart from a couple at classic shows

My 110 has the rear windows tinted.....





Previous Owner was a landscaper and did not want pikeys seeing what was in the back

Doh!:doh: It's difficult to tell what they are under the added wings wheel arches bonnet humps etc.

Currently in Shrewsbury at a cattle show depend what bridge you live over... English or welsh.....
Got the rear windows tinted by previousnowner gonna rip em out n start again only up to rear doors as the rear door windows ain't been done and the boot ones are ripped in places...keep things safe for my son, my gti is the same, done for practicality rather than looks as I don't want him gettin burnt and also dogs n tools are safer
the 5-0 only really bother you if fronts are done my sis had her whole car done, never been pulled but I can't stand it at night it is atrocious

I did my back door and the little windows on the back. Just to stop people looking in. It looks very good on a black landy

Just bought my first Defender.
I need to tint that back section as I carry instruments in it fairly often and security wise it would help a lot.
I was told it's very diffciult to do on a Defender due to having to take the windows out.
Anyone had that much trouble? is it worth trying to do yourself, the home done ones I have seen look pants to be honest but prepared to be surprised.
What sort of cost have you guys had? I was recently quoted £850 which seemed somewhat steep!

I have mine booked in next week at my local car tuning garage type place, there tinting everything from the B piller backwards at 20% smoke tint for £80 cash.

I got some cheap tint off ebay and an old back window out of a xr2i and spent 2 hours cleaning and polishing the glass with auto glym glass polish etc followed the instructions to the letter and it looked ****e you could see dust and marks that i swear wasn't there,

So rather than mutilate the Disco im sending it in to be done by a pro.

Very interesting, I hope it looks the biz afterwards. The guys I spoke to bascally didn't want to do it because of having to take the window out of the defender. Frankly the seal is not great when in from new so I am more than happy to find a garage that will do it without taking the windows out. but £850 is mad
£80 sounds very reasonable, will be keen to hear what it looks like afterwards

Thought I would pass on this info. Sorry if it is duplication but maybe a reminder to all will be helpful especially now that the tester technology seems to be more widely available to the police!

I have a RR P38 and I bought it about 4 years ago. It has tinted windows (nothing serious) just what I would consider a reasonable tint.

I was stopped by the police the other day. Unbeknown to me my windows were illegal. He got his tester out, measured my windows, only 32.5% of light was getting through my window instead of 75%. He gave me an on the spot fine which I thought was unreasonable. A warning would have been sufficient enough for me to get it sorted!

I have copied the following from a website just to give everyone some background on the subject. I hope it helps!

Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) Statement
The UK Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 Act details the legality of window tinting in the UK - and as amended specifies the minimum levels of light that must pass through the windscreen and front side windows.
For a legal window tint in the UK the specifications are:
a) Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985
b) The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
c) The front side windows (to either side of the drivers’ head) must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.
If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light, the vehicle is breaking UK Window tinting law.
The consequences of illegally tinted windows!
If you are driving with less than legally required light transmitting through the windscreen and front side windows, the following could happen ;
a) You could be stopped and fined - you are effectively handing the police a 'reason' to stop your vehicle - the car could be impounded if it is considered dangerous to drive and/or could be given a prohobition order until removed!
b) You will be required to remove the film (which will cost) and present your car to the Police confirming it has been returned to a legal status.
c) If you have an accident and it can be proven that the reduced vision caused by the illegal film was a contributing factor, you are likely to get part or full blame - even if it was not under normal circumstances your fault!
d) Even worse - your insurer - if they stand to be in a position where they are looking at full acceptance of liability (as you were at fault) - may determine that your insurance is invalidated! and you will be looking at footing the costs on your own for your own vehicle and any other damage to third party vehicles or property.
In summary, it might look great - and you may get away with it - in the same way that there are plenty of motorists with illegal exhausts or number plates - but is it worth the risk? It would be difficult for an insurer to maintain that a 'dodgy' number plate contributed to an accident - but how easy would it be to claim that the reason you did not see the motorbike is because you had illegally tinted the window ?

Maybe I will have to change my sunglasses lenses to clear lenses!!

Don't forget that includes the glass. You can barely put anything on the front because the glass itself blocks 20%.
We had a drug dealer Xtrail. Black, T spec, limo in the back and tinted front windows. After a few years we got made to take it off.

run out of patience with alot of people on here asrse licking and keeping there cliques happy.**** that.The people ive met are ok, and im the same when they meet me.
That and if the motor was sold with a legal tint(as most are) why add more?Something to hide?

Ours was sold new with illegal windows which is why dixons ended up paying the bill
