Hi guys, can somebody help,is there any way to tell where the timing marks are on the timing chain when there are no visable marks, its a 2.5 diesel, thanks pat

Crankshaft set a tdc fip pump locked and the cam locking tool and pin for chan tensioner what more do you need number one cylinder closed .

I.ve read that there are coloured marks on the chain to tie onto the marks on the crankshaft sprocket and the fip sprocket is that not the case then,

Bright links on bottom chain. Set engine at TDC number one firing (lock with timing pin) line bright links up with marks on crank sprocket and FIP sprocket. Some FIP sprockets will be marked 4 or 6. Line up with 6. 4 is for the four cylinder engine. Cam sprocket has no marks. With engine set as said fit cam using special holding tool. Then torque bolt.

Why do you need to remove the timing chain, I thought they were supposed to last the engine's lifetime?

As in the pistons and valves just.. crash?
Fair, what's the recommended change interval? Much longer than a belt I presume?

Did the head to cure an oil leak on mine at 117,000 miles. Bottom chain was passable top one was knackered. Tensioners had no wear to speak of.

Mine had nothing left nearly iron filings time .

Cam chain had bad toothache on a couple of links. A couple of mill on one maybe a mill on the other. Bottom chain was ok. Crank sprocket ok primary on FIP sprocket ok. Secondary on FIP sprocket slight wear, cam sprocket slight wear. Not a mark on either tensioner.

Think mine were a bit more gone than that as refit of fip and two full turns allowed teeth to jump .

As long as you turned engine correct way they must have been pretty knackered to jump, turning it backwards more than a tiny amount to get timing pin in is a no no.
