Hello fine people, does anyone know how much roughly a garage will charge for a belt plus tentioner change, just got a 90 300tdi 87000m and no evidence of a belt change. The aux drive belt (7ridge) is in a bit of a state too so that will need replacing too, or if anyone in the durham/sunderland area wants to do it for me im sure i can make it worth their while;).

A garage would normally cost more than £120 I would've thought!! If you have a garage and the tools it is easily a doable job, just time consuming. Make sure that you set the timing spot on, you can do this by use a timing pin to ensure it is set and not moved.

Timing kit would cost around £50-70

Daft question, but how do you flush an intercooler? Did my rad over the weekend and want to do the IC...

Also want to do the timing belt/gear at some stage....

£60 tops per hour x 2 maybe you take longer and have more confidence and experience not everyone is a mechanic so to speak :)

I agree it is not a difficult job, however I may indeed take a long time being a home mechanic, although I would rather check twice and do the job right the first time - it aint no race, thats just me ;)

I'm simply suggestion that he may expect to pay a garage more than £120. I don't know but would expect them to quote in excess of £160.

I did say £120 + parts that's the same.

60K is the book interval, but there is a time specified as well, cant remember what that is tho...

full modified kit, OEM pulleys, tensioner and dayco belt was about £70 a couple of months ago when I got mine, cant remember what the new drive belt cost, wasnt much for a gates belt, it has to come off for the timing belt anyhoo.

My 1995 300tdi has done 28k and never had it changed, do you think I should get it done just as a precaution purely based on the age of the belt?

I would, especially as that age of 300 had the "old style" pulley system, which had the guides on the crank pulley, and a tendancy to fail prematurely,
Look for a yellow X on the timing case to see if its had the mod or not,

28K miles, original/tracable, and what has it done in its earlier life, spent a lot of time idling?? that sounds like an unbelievably low mileage for an 18 y/o motor.
