Hi guys, I am thinking of moving my Disco on for a P38.

This is the ad:

1998 Range Rover 4.6 HSE Almost Vogue spec with extras
with fully working Professionaly fitted LPG System (recently checked and £1200 spent on it)
Had a very expensive and properly done full engine rebuild including heads etc (this cost over £5500 all fully receipted) and was done in the last 8000 miles
Full Cream Leather
Long MOT till Dec 2013
Long Tax Till Dec 2013 (this is worth £220!!)
Viewings and Inspections welcome

If the guys consumption claims are correct then it appears to get about the same if not slightly better fuel consumption pound for pound. What do you V8 - LPG chaps think about this?

I do about 500 miles a month so I don't have a huge mileage and most of that mileage is on motorway runs.

It looks very tidy inside and out. The guy wants 3000 ONO. One plan was to buy it, add it to my insurance and run it for a month, and see what it's like, if I like it sell the disco, if I don't I'll just move it on.

I sort sort of feel I need to have had a V8 RR.

Hi,

I cant see the original ad so cant comment on the rest of it.
Assuming everything else is in good order then i wouldnt say it's too far from the going rate bearing in mind the engine rebuild (did it have top hat liners fitted)?
I get approx 280 miles from a full tank of LPG (80ltrs = £55 to fill) on a good motorway run.

The reason most people sell a P38 is because of repair costs....

If he has spent 5K on a rebuild and 1200 on an LPG system......You don't shell out that much capital if you gonna sell it a few months down the line (8k miles).....what else is wrong with it is what I would be asking....!!!

I could be wrong and it is a straight motor, but with the wrong end of 6k+ spent and yet still off loading it....raises an eyebrow to me!

Fair comment from Saint,
It's unusual to see P38's with recent engine rebuilds for sale as this is usually done if it's a long term keeper due to the cost being higher than the value.
As i said though, depends on the condition of the rest of it. If you can take it for a long test drive then check everything.

Go for it ! you can always get a independent inspection done for peace of mind and a bartering tool if any minor things found wrong with the car. In the worst case scenario all you have lost is the cost of the inspection. One of the knowledgeable lads on here may help if in your area. Good luck

Yeah it is a little suspect. I've just spent a lot on my Defender, and totally rebuilt it, so it would then be odd for me to sell it for a few grand! I don't believe the seller is the person who did this work though, could have been a friend or relative who died or something.

Mechanically speaking I will give it a thorough checking over.

Thanks for the help.

I only get 180 miles out of mine :(

I've just converted from a Disco to 4.6 HSE P38 with LPG too. Mine's a '97 and was only £2K - pretty much everything appeared to work and so far no major surprises. My Disco was in need of a lot of work, so sold on eBay at £400 with a brutally honest write up! I'd already spend over £800 in the previous 2 months and another £400-500 needed.

I opted to spend less than my £3K budget that I was going use on a diesel on the basis that I'd have a grand in hand for 'snagging' and unforeseen failures! So far, apart from an intermittent handbook on the air-con, and the RH side of the dash display going dim, everything's good. If nothing breaks in the next couple of months, (and aside of spending the cash saved on a bigger boat engine ) I'll use my 'saved' funds to stick a stainless exhaust on (slight blow currently from mid section) and a set of Grabber ATs. Like the one you're looking at, mine has had 000's spent in the last 3 years. I'm not complacent in thinking that's it however - just goes with the territory I think... I don't regret purchase a bit however as a P38 has been on my shopping list since parting with the last Classic in 2006. So far, the fuel cost with LPG appears as good as the diesel was likely to have worked out and as I tow, the extra hp won't go amiss either.

You'll get some great advice on here too - these guys know their stuff!

I had the same blow from mid box. Fitted a Janspeed cat back system that really compliments the V8 sound:) Not cheap but worth it!
