Ive sold my Disco.............Please read on !

Ok ive sold my disco, the main reason is that since i have owned it i have spent hour after hour fixing the thing
When i forst got it i made a list of things to do...and started working my way through them
Only thing is that everytime i crossed off an item, i also added another 2 or 3 which i found, it really was never ending

The final straw- I had a week off work for a rest and to look into holiday locations etc....I spent nearly the whole week under the damn thing

It really got to me, as i work 12 to 14 hours per day monday to friday, and 8 hours on a saturday, so if im lucky my only spare time is maybe the odd saturday afternoon and a sunday.

My spare time is valuable, as i have a family, so i dont think i have the time needed to be a Landy owner if it involves spending so much time working on it

Ideally i would love to restore one as a hobby, if i had more time, but as i am self employed and the landy was used along with my Audi for me to earn money, i use my car when i dont need to carry much, and the landy to carry goods and tools if i have a larger scale job to do

Looking at the forum i believe everyone spends huge amounts of time on their Landy, and i admit i love Landies, but i dont think i could just buy one and drive it, they seem to be an ongoing project forever, which is brilliant for a hobby, but maybe not practicle for a regular runner.

The question is........
Do i buy another newer landy hoping i can just service and drive it
I have around £4 - £6k and need to replace it with something, and i need to tow my caravan aswell

And i cant keep putting my tools in my car, as you can see... would you use it for work ??????

Let me know what you think, along with any advice for my next purchase

Well 'Ruby' is 17 years old and I use her for work and trips at the weekend... I service and fix everything I can... she does 1K a month and is used as a work horse at weekends. I don't spend a lot of time on her. She now has a shrill when I kick down (probably due to a recent leak in oil cooler pipe and running on low oil) so she may need a new autobox soon depending on cost (and it will be a mechanic doing it not me!).

Maybe you just had one that's had a hard life?

Not sure, engine wise it was spot on but......

Blue - done
Red - needed doing

Leaking alpine windows
Front bumper corners fixed to fresh air
Inner wings seen better days - patched but will need doing - took 1 day
Rear of sills seen better days - trims removed and refitted
Leaking swivel hub
Boot floor would need attention soon
Fixed interior control lights
Hi-Lo Diff selection knackered
Fixed donut on prop coupling
Leaking Radiator
Noisy above 50, sounds like tyre noise but louder
Waxoyld underneath - Took 1 day
Intermttent rear light not working
Poor handling, maybe suspension issue ?
Steering rubbing sound
Rattle from underneath, couldnt find it
Had new cambelt & pulleys
Had all oils topped up
Oil & filter changed
Air filter changed
Bull Bar fitted
New rocker cover gasket
New oil breather
Sealed gutter leaks
Noise from o/s rear brake
Elec windows worked sometimes
Most window rubbers perished
Rear arches maybe 12 months left in them
Bottom of door post rotten
Bottom of doors corroding
Seat adjustment didnt work
Needed an MOT in a months time ( at the time of sale )

Believe me, this was discovered within a month of ownership
I got it from a trader, and i knew nothing about Discos or the problem areas when i bought it

It looks stunning, but as i knew nothing about them i was assured by the trader this was one of the best out there, and it did look better than anything i had seen

But on the plus side i sold it and got my money back !!!
And the guy who bought it has a mate who rebuilds them

As you can see from the items in blue,,,, i did try, but with the items in red needed adressing i think it was a bridge too far for me

There were probably many other items that dont spring to mind aswell

Just glad to get my money back, and want to avoid that again, as my time and money could have been used up forever

Is this normal for these, or am i being picky cos i couldnt cope :)

Is this normal for these

The rust problem's are due to previous owner's neglect (but Disco's do rot like mad if not cared for), as for the rest it is a 14 yr old motor and part's do get worn & need replacing.

As for you and needing a motor, working long hour's and having to juggle time with the family ... maybe having an older LR might not be a good idea.
