Bought my missus a 1800 K-series,"Venetian Mauve" (Mr Whippy Purple) Freelander couple of weeks ago, travelled 150 miles to collect it, (yet another Fleabay purchase), started up & let it idle until it got to working temperature to check for telltale signs of pressurisation in the jacket water, all fine exchanges readies & off I set.
Following morning goes to start it, bursts into life, idles spot on, but touch the throttle & it splutters & dies. (only when stone cold)
any ideas?
here's what I've done so far
Plugs & leads
Cap & rotor arm (carbon brush was non existant)
water temp sensor
I.A.C. valve
I.A. temp sensor
Throttle position sensor
only thing I've not changed is Crank position sensor as I didn't have one in stock!
Oh & the diagnostic socket had a poor connection to the MEMS, so the bloke with the Testbook couldn't interogate it:(
HELP
Brian.

Finally got to the bottom of this one after much head scratching, made a diagnostic socket & plumbed it directly into the M.E.M.S. unit, hey presto after a quick interrogation all was revealed, the MAP sensor had failed on the ECU, so as a result the thing was running on it's mapped settings, in which it relies on input from the throttle pot and engine speed to approximate the fueling settings.
One ecu & recode later, the car has been transformed.
Fanbloodytastic :D :D
Now does anyone out there have any ideas on testing the V.C.U.?
Cheers
Brian:p

**** easy to test. get under they car with a bottle of tippex. paint a mark on front and rear props and vcu, all in a line. then take it for a spin, with a bit of off road for good measure (ming recommends golf courses, leave that to you). when you get back hopefully they won't line up. if they do still line up, ya vcu might be u/s, and you should investigate further before it destroys your ird. If they don't line up, it might still be u/s but it's not seized, so won't destroy your ird. Do a search on here and there are other more in depth methods, but the tippex test is the easiest to do first.
