Hi Folks,

A few weeks back when towing a car trailer through a mountain range I noticed my transmission temperature light was illuminated on the dash. I let everything cool down and set off again, it came back on within 10 minutes.

I eventually made it home and just put the light down to high temps down to towing up and down hills, even though it had not happened before. Then for a few weeks it all went fine with no lamps lit.

Then last week when making a few trips up and down into town with trailers full of soil the light came on again. This time after just two days the light came on just driving through a cut field after just 30 seconds of driving.

The temperature outside was 25C and the Disco had been parked up for four hours. Yet the light still came on with no loads and just normal driving in dry grass.

I realised I must have an issue!

Doing my research I see that a common issue is the sender/sensor that sits in the bottom of the transmission cooler in the front of the radiator. But I had to do a check on fluid levels for peace of mind of course.

This was the twist that confuses me. I jacked the car up and sat it square on four stands. On removing the filler plug (not the lower drain plug) from the gearbox sump, a strong flow of ATF shot out. Once I got a bucket to catch this and removed the plug, approx 500ml in total of ATF flowed into the bucket at a fast rate.

Following several instructions and once the ATF started to flow in a steady 1.5mm flow of fluid I replaced the filler plug.

I then went up and down the gearbox with the engine running to ensure the whole box was lubed up. Then checked the fluid level again and still the same small flow of fluid came out of the filler.

So in my eyes the box has sufficient ATF in there, but why did so much come out when I first checked it? Also how would it be possible to overfill the box if indeed this is the case?

Even after all of this, the transmission temp light still came on, in fact straight away this time. Then stayed lit up!

On disconnection of the sender loom connector the dash light went straight out. Naturally proooving its not an isse with the gearbox sender.

I am fairly confident my cooler sender is goosed and will replace this. But am a little worried about the ammount of ATF that came out of the filler.

Sorry for the long story, but its as it all happened and may help others if in teh same boat.

What are peoples thoughts??

Cheers

did you have engine running box in neutral at the time of checking level ?1/2 litre excess is easy done and wouldnt hurt, car on a slope ,replacing what came out without checking level on the thought it was correct before etc

I ran the engine first, then checked level. Then went up and down gears but switched engine off again just prior to checking the second time. Engine was never actually running when I checked the level as I was worried about pressure in there?

I just followed several online guides and had the car level prior to checking levels.

No engine running during checking though?? Coul dmy level now be low?

Cheers

you need to check level with engine running box in neutral , as soon as engine starts pump in the front of box sucks oil from the sump and circulates it obviously level drops in sump ,compared to when engines off when oil drains back to sump ,very likely low , sender would be my choice , if oil was clean red , box does get hotter on warm days and if driving below lock up speed with a load and its not uncommon for light to come on but then ,but usually in such cases it never comes on again for some time

Thanks for the pointers folks. I had better check it again tomorrow with engine running.

Would you say I shoul dnot drive the car until such time as its checked with motor running then? Especially towing?

Cheers

Quick update...

Removed the filler plug with the engine running and nothing ran out. So I liked up my transfer pump into the ATF and the sump actually took on 1.2 litres of fluid!

Good job I did not drive it and checked in here first. Thanks for that.

The transmission lamp is now illuminated all the time, until the front mounted sender is unplugged. So it has to be this thats faulty.

Cheers again
Dave
