The Big Debate - Britpart or S**tpart?

I desperately needed a lift pump for my 90 as the original went fanny up.
So I hurried to Brookies and all they had was a ****part one.
So I bought it anyhow.
After much annoyance trying to pump the fuel through with the substandard lifter I almost gave up, BUT with all these extra pipes and bits that came with the pump and were surplus to my requirements, I managed to rig up one of these inline fuel bulb pumps between the lift pump and the fuel filter.
That saved its bacon cause with literally a few pumps on me fuel bulb and I was bled up in seconds and running again.

In summery the pump works fine, but the lifter is gay and needs a separate hand pump to prime the system.
A bit 50/50 for me.

Ive never had any luck with the hand pump on the lift pump, i think they are of a ****e desighn.

They're temperamental due to where abouts the cam is i find, giving the engine a quick crank over usually allows the manual lift to be enabled and gain the pressure needed.

I've had more problems with Paddocks than Britparts I wouldn't touch Paddocks with a barge pole, though I might use Britparts if it was a part that was non critical and I couldn't get an original part.

Not sure what to make of their marketing with statements like this on their website;

"The name ‘Britpart’ is synonymous with quality parts for Land Rovers and the company has earned a truly enviable reputation around the globe".

though it has to be said they do have a 'reputation'

Well if "quality" means "dodgy" and "enviable" means "deserved" then it reads a bit better

I see they've now aquired a 2 year warranty, anyone ever tried to claim for anything?
I changed my water pump last December ( usual story only part i could get was from a well known aftermarket supplier based in Craven Arms) and it packed up a week ago - since swapped for an OE one - much happier, but i'm tempted to put a warranty claim in.

****part, We had two brit part alternators over the weekend, both blew up within a minute of having it running. Went and got a new one from CJF and not had a problem.

oh heck i'm worried now. only had my landy a few months and fitted a ****part timing belt kit when i got it. before i knew better. think i am gonna have to pull her to bits again and take it out while i have the chance.

It might be ok, the good belts I think are ok for 60k miles so I would just change it earlier, maybe 20k?? I fitted a kit with a dayco belt but britpart tensioners and they haven't fallen off yet. Maybe whip the cover off and check it at the next major service? That will give you an idea of wear rate.

I joined this forum just so I can cast my vote. I ordered a MTC6505 Lock barrel set from what I think is a respected supplier, I got Britpart kit.

Well what can I say, looks reasonable quality until I look at the keys. At first I thought all the keys were blanks; maybe they just forgot to cut them but no.

On closer inspection the keys were cut and did operate the barrel, but the keys only had one small cut, not the usual "mountain range" effect you get like other keys. Very disappointed, I know the key profile you get on lock sets is random but I can't be unlucky enough that the profile I had was more or less exactly like a key blank

I have a genuine set on order!!

Now lets see how long the new wiper blades last!!

Go on then what are their service kits like? got all the filters and plugs for my rangie sitting on living room floor, didnt get round to doing it yesterday, was having my windows on me house changed. How bad are the filters and plugs. do i bung it all on ebay on try it on "roger"

all landrover part suppliers use allmakes,britpart and bearmach as well as landrover themselves thats all there is for general parts ,i believe paddocks is britparts biggest customer except for the mod,britpart like the rest do a range of parts pattern ,oem and genuine if you chooose pattern what do you expect ,i can buy genuine wheel brgs rtc3429g for £5 (timken)allmakes and bearmach pattern are on a par with britpart probably made in same chinese factory ,britpart do either genuine lr timing belt or dayco which give no problems,britpart do oe 300tdi water pump for £20 ,i wouldnt use pattern parts from any of them unless of proven quality ,instead of shouting ****part you should ask your parts supplier for oem or genuine britpart or bearmach instead of cheapest,most of the genuine stuff you get comes through britpart or bearmach or allmakes

I buy OEM or Genuine parts where it really counts, like anything to do with the engine management system etc. Thats from noticing a cheap lambda sensor made no difference to the MIL coming on. Fitted a real Bosch one and not had a problem since.

Same when I replaced the ABS sensors, but I think there are times when none OEM / Genuine can be cost effective, and sufficient for the job.

Have to say I was let down by some BritPart ignition leads. And that was a pain since they are not the easiest things to change on the Thor engine with that coil packs hidden right down the back. I put Magnecor on second time round.

You just have to use your judgement when ordering, and we all learn from our mistakes...

Okay, I ordered a bunch of gear from Paddocks. I ordered what was listed as OEM and it arrived with a ****part label. I'm not too worried, the only major part was the drop-arm ball joint kit, the other parts labelled as ****part are the lock washers for the hubs that you smack the granny out of anyway.

Question is, how do they get away with listing those items as OEM?

Cos landrover didnt make every single nut bolt washer and filter ... they outsourced..so the oem is one of many original equip manufacturers i'm afraid.

Bugger, no wonder bits break so easy.

You get what you pay for I suppose. If a genuine front cam seal is 12 quid with the vat and you see one for half the price there is a chance it could be ****e and cause more problems than its worth.

Its not worth the double labour cost, to remove/refit, to skimp on quality parts.

I feel the same, all the other stuff I bought for it are either genuine or OEM, lockheed discs, mintex pads, lucas master, lockheed slave, timken bearings etc. etc. so I was a little surprised to see a couple of ****part labels in that lot. Ho hum, best buy a spare right now.

most of the oem or genuine from your local suppliers comes from britpart

I was after a couple of bits from my local indy and specified "No Britpart", got talking to the bloke behind the counter and he seemed genuinley surprised with the crap reputation ****epart appear to have
Having said that i have just fitted a britpart rear exhaust section and a radiator, they did fit alright, so fingers crossed
