The best / suggested way to fill coolant from empty?

Any advice please on refilling a 4.6 V8 cooling system from empty, I drained down the system and now want to refill.
Should I do it from the expansion tank only, or is there any value in additionally filling from areas like the top hose directly into the rad and block for example.
I want to avoid any air locks obviously. I’ve read its about 11 litres in total of cooling the system will take, is this accurate?

My mate filled his from the top hose, left it running for 20 mins whilst topping it up from the expns tank.
 
A sure fire way of getting water into the rad, to both sides of the stat and the block huh? this is the way I'm thinking of attacking it...
 
I topped up most in the top of the rad and the rest in the expansion bottle.

If it was 11.5l, then I did 10l in the rad, turned the engine over for a minute then the rest into the expansion bottle (still keeping an eye on the level mark)
