Jus found offer at ASDA. Nowhere near as good. 2x 3 litres for £5. Works out at 83ppl. Put a tenna's worth in the car jus as the fuel light was on... took a lil while to start and had a few low power moments for a minute. Now it runs fine. No black smoke under heavy acceleration now either... I declare it a win... apart from the price lol

Today was a good day for the Meerkat army.

We stormed Tesco's in Hull and relieved them of 48 litres of best rapeseed oil. On a 70/30 split with expensive diesel we calculate that we will pay only £1 per litre instead of £1.19.

It is not as good as mongoose fat, but beggars cannot be choosers. (and we get our clubcard points).

Our thanks to Biolandy for this bit of intelligence.

I did well today a local cash and carry had 12x1 litre bottles that had been knocked about so were taped together that than properly packaged a nice £2.75

Now, i drive a v8, so all this talk of sneaking around on cheap fuel is relatively unheard of to me!

however, through 7 pages, you guys havce me intrigued.

my main concwern is that it seems like a minor hassle getting the mix right - what's stopping you running on pure veg?

is it the viscosity, or the fact that it wont compression ignite?

im sure i spotted a landy in a mag that ran on pure veg, but the chap had made a dead simple heat exchanger out of a big piece of copper piupe with small copper pipe running through it - presumably to preheat the oil.

tell me more tell me more - a topic this exciting makes me want to drive a diesel.

peeps really don't need to worry about mixing it, or what ratio they use - just pour it straight in - if it gets cold use a bit more diesel, or (as i do) add a few litres of petrol to each tank of SVO

running 100% this weather is no problem for a well maintained and good condition 200/300/TD

surely vegetable oil is more renewable/abundant?

Not enough land to grow the amount of crop needed to make it a viable renewable/sustainable fuel source for the whole world

you have to linger on the heater plugs a little longer first thing, if it's been a cold night but not at the moment.

more people have started doing this in the last few years, that's why the price of veg oil has doubled hence the big rush to tesco's recently.

p.s. I use waste veg oil..........even cheaper.

maybe a mix of the two then, just to keep the crude oil levels alive?

however, i watched a film recently which raised the point that everything is controlled by profits and price fixing - ie they dont grow more crops because the farmers are in deals with the oil companies to keep the diesel selling.

it's only an idea and a simple way of putting it, but you can kinda see it happening...

anyway, if it keeps landys going its good enough for me!

so tell me, how can i smell or tell a cars running on oil. is there a difference between veg and sunflower? just the smell?

what smells better? anything gotta be better than DERV, cough cough barf.

Cant see there being a "deal" in place, theres simply not enough land, plus other crops need to be grown and crop rotation needs to be taken into consideration, its a nice idea though maybe grow it on the moon??? lol

There's simply not enough cooking oil in the UK to take over from diesel entirely according to the government's Better Regulation Commission. Current waste oil supplies could only feasibly power around one-350th of the UK's cars. In fact, the Energy Systems Research Unit estimates that the UK can only produce enough biodiesel from waste veggie oil to displace less than 0.6% of conventional diesel.

If you are behind any diesel running veg oil or bio diesel,you will get the distinct smell of chips,if the vehicle has a cat fitted the smell is reduced somewhat-veg oil gives a more obvious smell compared to bio diesel.

I'm doing my bit for shell's profits. I go buy 5l of petrol now and again (£6.25) to mix with 50-100l of oil.

exactly, i say keep it hush hush.

so just one more time...

you buy a diesel car, perhaps an old one rather than something newer, but not necessarily.

you run it nearly out of fuel, and then fill it with veggie oil that you have been stockpiling.

and then you keep on driving, completely as normal, for ever and ever, for about 40p per litre?

without having to make any conversion or incur any cost?

and if you run out of veggie you use diesel again for a bit?

and so it continues?

if so, then that is truly awesome!

is there a legality against running 100% oil? or do you have to have some kind of tax paid fuel in there aswell?
