got chance of a TDV6 disco 3,2006 60,000miles. how do these rate to a td5?
as have got a 2004 es premium 66,000 miles, but is light damage! do these series 3 have the problems like the td5/300tdi, as i prefer the look of the series 2, but is it an age thing? modern or 8 year old car:confused:

IMO the D3's engine itself is much better(more powerfull and reliable)... but the body / chassis are inferior and the electronic systems make more tricks, are much harder to diagnose, and more expensive to fix.

^^^^ exactly what he said.

Once the d3 gets a bit older and cheaper people will buy them and realise they are a money pit. Excellent car when working but they will develop huge gremlins.

The d2 will reign supreme even when it's 20 years old, just like the d1 does now if you're after something simple.

D2 is commonly regarded as the best all round land rover ever made, and nothing will ever compare because we will never ever return to that level of simplicity mixed with technology.

D1, simple.
D2, simple/technical.
D3, technical.
D4, **** knows but I can't see someone driving round it one when it's 15 years old, it's a
Pimpmobile, not much use for the working man.

The Park brake issue that Daz linked to is caused by poor maintanance. Period.

The electronic park brakes just require more maintanance than the manual ones. You just need to remove the rear wheel and adjust it correctly through the disk's inspection hole. Its a really simple process and could potentially save you a **** ton of cash if you own one.

Other known issues with the D3 are mainly simple things that get expensive.

EGR's are crap, but bypass kits are easilly available. Although a siezed valve in one makes the car sluggish as hell and the EML to come on.

They are very capable offroad machines though ! Just dont buy one to early as they had issues with the body harness routing underneath the car and certain SJ's not being specified in manufacture as 'sealed'. :)

If you want reliability, go find a 300 , but the D3's can be very nice cars (dont buy a manual and tow though).

the main thing on the TDV6 is the reliability and the mechanics, the td5 is ok but don't really want to be under the bonnet all the time or in a pile of rust, as some of the later cars are rusty,

If you do a bit of digging, it wont take you long to find a picture of a D3/4 having its body taken off to change a turbo charger !.

IMHO, I think the D3/4 is much nicer inside than the D2, BUT, I dont think I will be able to do as many repairs on a D3/4 as I can do on my d2. I just dont think the D3/4 is going to embraced by the " Landrover community ", as it gets older.

Time will tell though.

Del.

no i think you are right, it was just a thought of getting something a bit newer, better ride but i must say they look a bit square and boxy,i think i will stick with the td5 and look for one of the very last that has been looked after, i have looked at some and they are not half the car mine is at 4 years younger, but the garages want around 10k, then a low milage one more money again , the best thing is thou! they sell !!!!

there a landrover! all have issues!!

pre 08 mdels you can blank off the EGRs. The gearboxes (autos) are starting to have issues on 100K+ and they leak just like a D2.

I'd have one for towing, better gearbox but no for economics

Great website here http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/

You know, sometimes I look for a reason to dislike my D2 (2003 TD5 59k miles) but I just can't. It's a low miler I know but it hasn't let me down in two years (that's just f**ked it).

It's got a dated interior, leaks water every now and again from various orifices, and sounds like a tractor. But it does decent mpg, doesn't complain, has done 1,000 miles at 80mph (objecting) and when it snowed pure mental last year it ****ed all over everything else rode through the freshly laid carnage without a care.

Now I'm going to off-road in it...

I have also been having thoughts for a TDV6 disco but my local Land Rover specialist said they had bad electronics and poor fuel consumption and he also advised getting the latest TD5 possible as they were well sorted by then. Trouble is now, my current TD5 is going so well, averaging 25mpg being driven spriteley, and has been totally reliable. Its an auto and tows a 25 ft caravan brilliantly. I feel scared about even changing to a later TD5 currently but the mileage is now 125K and the towing bit concerns me.

Hey if your happy with your car, it is sound and mechanically running well, stick with what you have you got! i would.
i have looked at numerous late td5's, not only are they expensive, but there marked to hell, and all the garages know they can sell em as winter is on it's way. i am still looking hard!!!
also some are as rusty as hell as the photo's on the original first post or two,
as for TDV6 ive gone off em as too many grey areas with them,
and a lot of people say no!!! TD5 are better by far! good luck

Sorry, but whoever designed the d3 needs flogging with their own ripped off arm:mad:. They are ugly, look ridiculous without the spare on the back and if you are really happy with paying £450 road tax:eek: Then go and get one. Personally I think they look like a pope mobile. :D

There's nowt wrong with having no wheel ont' back :D

I had the wheel off my D2 for a while and it started to grow on me...thought about removing the bracket but nowhere else to put wheel other than the boot...now sadly I'm having to try to get rid of the car!

That is such a smart TDi 200 - a real beauty.

Functional and smart - can't be beat:D:D:D

My first Disco was a 3 door 200tdi... it was a really good LR...it was 9 years old when I got it but mechanically sound...did alot of off-road miles too in all weathers...worst thing to happen was slave cylinder packed in so had to drive 100 miles down A9 with no clutch...the interior was more practical too with that huge flat dash...much more of a Land Rover, grab handle for passenger etc...
