Last month my 2003 L322 TD6 started juddering and misfiring. It was booked in to an indy but on the way there the car cut out and would not restart. Well it did restart should I say but it made a big racket (Heavy diesel knock) with FUEL INJ. SYSTEM on the message and loads of smoke. I promptly switched if off and finished the journey on foot in the hope that the garage would tow me in. It took about 45 - hour to get to the back to the car armed with the indy's test book and tow rope. He took the key off me and started the car. It fired up and no smoke or warning message. Strange. Still had the misfire tho. Drove to the garage.

I went to collect the car after the garage said it was ready to collect and it drove home great. After a replacement injector and MOT.

I parked it on the drive to wash it, it started to shudder and pop and fart. Then nothing cut out. Would not restart. Then again the FUEL INJ. System message. After a couple of days investigating the car runs great from cold. all the way up to just below the half way on the temp gauge. then it misfires and eventually stalls and cuts. It will not restart until it is cool again.

I spoke to the garage and they said bring it back in. Can not drive it there. They discussed over the phone about when it first broke and that no codes were logged in the computer. Stupidly after reading the forums in an effort to save labour while waiting for the recovery firm to collect the car I went out and bought a LP inline fuel pump, LP in tank fuel pump, Genuine fuel filter and camshaft sensor. All fitted and still the problem persists.

So in a nut shell from cold start the car is great no dramas. Soon as the temp get over the 1/3rd mark it starts missing, and eventually cuts out. It will not restart until the car has cooled right down.

Please help any ideas??

Thanks

Having been down this route a few times I get all the injectors tested as you could have multiple injector failures

Thanks guys - By injector test you mean a leak off test?, how much is an acceptable amount of leak off?
Also roughly how much is the injector wiring harness. I am looking to keep the car for a another year at least so I want it right.
I have owned it for 4 years and love it (when it is running) :)

A bit of an update:
After half giving up on the Range Rover for this month, my dad came round tonight to see the kids before I go back to work for a month tomorrow.
He has 35 motor trade experience however is not currently working in the trade, he had a quick look at the car, as I was explaining the problems I have been experiencing.
We started the car and it fired up on the button and was running fine as before whilst cold. It started to warm up and we could hear the car starting to struggle and miss. The temp gauge was up to the half way point and the car was sounding like it was going to cut out as before. Dad started to remove the cam cover to get to the injectors. He started touching and feeling all the connections... Nothing, still missing and sounding like a cut out was immanent. we then removed the cover off the ECU box on the O/S front of the engine compartment. Then again "touchy, feely", still nothing until he waggled the fuse holder and relay in the bottom corner of the box. All of a sudden the car stopped missing and farting and ran smooth. Dad said that it was nothing significant to report just checked the connections. The car has been running for nearly 3 hours now without failing. I turned it off. Pulled all the 30 amp fuses cleaned the terminal and the relay and re-fitted the car started instantly again with the the temp gauge showing 1/2 way.
Problem seems to be solved. Had a run up and down the lane. Car drives great. No missing. All in all a very smooth engine. So when I get back I will test again but from what I have seen I am confident that the cutting out when hot issue is resolved. Must of been a intermittent connection on that engine fuse block.
Wonderbar....
Just wish I had asked for the "touchy feely service" before spending upwards of £600 for camshaft sensors and pumps etc.

One thing that has appeared is a bit of smoke from the exhaust pipes, when hot. Looks like unburnt fuel that is in the exhaust - Hopefully a good run when I get home will solve that...
Could the bores have washed if the car was over fueling?

Not had a diesel with bore wash so honestly don't know but if the fuel does nit clear I would have the injectors tested for leak back but could be the other way and the nozzle is leaking

Thanks mate, I will do that. Thanks for you input. I have just been on your website and read all the testimonials. Seems you are one clued up cookie..:)

After a full 9 days of trouble free motoring it is painfully clear that the loose connection in the ECU compartment was the root of all my cutting out problems. So...

I have if anyone is interested a fully working in tank lift pump/sender unit. 270+ pounds from the dealer from a 2003 TD6 with 56000miles. Works perfectly. Offers
Also a inline filter (120GBP) and cam shaft sensor (96GBP) from dealers. Again offers for each.
I am going to put them all up on the for sale section and ebay.
Also a full set of 18" Vogue alloys - 2 tyres OK 2 need replacing.

Its nice to get in the rr and drive it somewhere without roadside dramas, at last.
