TD5 whining from belt area

Evening all

I wonder if anyone can help me,the disco td5 has started to develop a whining noise from the drive belt area,i know the belt needs changing as this has seen better days but while it's off was wondering if there is any common faults with any of the idler pulleys or tensoiner i should know about before i start.

Right i have had a look and it seems to be the power steer pump which is noisy,but as this drives the water pump aswell,how do i know which to change,as ive been quoted £140 for a power steer pump and don't want to change this to find it was the water pump that was at fault!

Water pumps dont whine, they just work or leak generally. You could do a fluid change on the pump / steering, that would probably help and if it does make it quieter then that solves it for you, although I "suspect" its your ACE pump thats "noisy" (if you have ACE)
 
under the bonnet, if the power steering reservoir (by the ABS modulator) has 2 caps, then you have ACE. (top right of piccy)

Ok, then it would be worthwhile to renew the power steering fluid to see "if" its that causing your whine......

incidently is it the same "whine" as you get from power steering when your on full steering lock ?
 
Yeah pretty much the same as sort of whine woooing noise yeah lol, and gets louder when you are on the move......It doesn't do this noise just when steering it does this constently... if this helps!
 
Right i changed the power steer fluid today and this has not solved the problem,which i thought i wouldn't anyway,i also replaced the belt which has quitened the noise slightly,but the whining noise is still there around the power steer pump pulley and 2 idler pulley areas,so i think i might change the idler pulleys next to try and rule them out.
Surely there is someone on this forum that has had this problem before.
 
Cheers for the reply i will keep this in mind as i have found a td5 in a breakers near where i work, it's just an irratating noise as it is just as loud as the engine pretty much

It does sound like it's close to failing if it's that loud. I got a power steering pump from my local indy for £150 just before xmas. It had taken about 16 months for mine to fail. it had been noisey since i bought my landy.
 
Its not hard, just a few bolts tbh. Did mine at the weekend to "try" and locate a rattle.

Disconnect the feed pipe from the resevoir and drain that into a container.
Remove the viscous fan
Remove V belt.
Remove Pulley from pump
Undo the 16mm Pipe on the pump.
Remove 4 bolts securing pump, (2 long , 2 short, central bolt secures mounting bracket)
Pull the pump out with the feed pipe still connected. You will notice the feed pipe has one of those spring type pipe clips on it, Its quite difficult to remove that from underneath, I had changed mine for a standard jubilee clamp a while ago because my feed pipe had chaffed on the engine sump and had "nearly" worn all the way through so that has been replaced before.

The spring type clamps allow the pipe to rotate with engine vibration which is when it contacts the sump and wears through, a jubilee clip allows you to tighten it and keep at a better angle away from the sump. When refitting, its easier to fit the pump and then the pipe so you can feed it up through the others with the correct routing.

You also have to swap the mounting bracket onto the new pump.
 
i thought I had a belt issue and it turned out to be a warped exhaust manifold.

When revved gas escapes and causes a screech/whistle.

BG LandRovers in Monmouth area, Wales sold me a skimmed manifold and job sorted. No noise just go go go
 
Cheers for the replies im gonna sort this while i'm off work at the weekend do you need a special tool to get the viscous fan coupling off?
