td5 starter problems-please help

Hi there, have been having starter probs on my td5 defender for a while now, takes 10-15 turns of the key before it starts, finally it wont start at all!! have fitted new starter motor and i have the same problem!!! i have cleaned up all leads, connectors, still nothing!! Im guessing it cud be the dreaded ecs! There is a bit of oil in the red lead under the seat but this was replaced last year, could this be the problem?? can i clean it with wd40? and if so how??
does anybody have any suggestions as to what could be the problem
any advice appreciated

Are there any clicking noises when the key is being turned to the crank position? If No, check the fly lead to the starter is turning live when the key is turned to the crank position.

theres no clicking, the yellow relay inside makes a click noise and i can hear a clunk from starter motor (solenoid) but no repeated clicking, will check that the fly lead is live in the morning,
is that the thin wire with connector or the big thick one attached by a bolt??

nb thinking mayb its something to do with the annoying ecu/ecs thingy, have noticed a bit of oil inside red plug under the seat, is it possible that it has something to do with it all,
ps didnt buy a landy to have weird computer probs, thought it would be mechanic friendly but to be honest every time i have a problem with my td5 its a nitemare!!!

Check for voltage on the thin wire as it is that one that operates the solenoid.
The heavy cable is direct from the battery and live all the time.
If you have voltage when turning the key to crank then its either the solenoid not working (in which case it would probably be easier to fit a new starter) or the internal switch contacts have expired for which you can get a simple rebuild kit for about a tenner off eBay. If you say you can hear a clunk from the starter solenoid then chances are its the solenoid switch contacts unless the starter motor itself is seized.

If the starter motor is going clunk, the fly lead is getting its feed. Sounds like the starter motor contacts are fecked.

its a brand new starter motor and the one i took off was doing the same, so i dont think it can be the starter motor contacts or the solenoid switch contacts (are they part of the starter motor part),
still scratching my head and still off the road!

done some investigations and lights do dim when key is turned, cable from bat neg tp starter motor makes no differnce so isnt the earth!! starter motor and solenoid are new
any ideas please!!

Just cos it's new it doesn't mean you should rule it out. The contacts are part of the starter motor solenoid. If you starter motor is going 'clunk' it means the solenoid is operating but the motor aint spinning up.

What make is the new starter?

To rule out the starter motor you could remove it and put it in a vice and then connect it up to a good battery, if you then use a screwdriver across the 2 contacts it should spin up, but make sure it's in a vice cos if it is a good starter then it'll jump all over the place!

just a thought have you had it connected up to diagnostics? just wondered if there where any fault codes in the ecu.

Nuff said.

I rekon the starter is fecked.

It certainly wouldn't be the first-also, have a look at the flywheel, make sure there's no tooth damage.
