Td5 Oil in ECU Connection.

When Mike did my Td5 Re-Map, the usual oil was found in the Injector Harness. I intend to replace the Harness asap. Is there any way to stop the oil getting back into the new harness again, or is it just unstoppable.

Hi Phil, if you replace the injector harness you'll find the oil will stop working it way through.

It'll take a little while before the oil in the main harness has worked it's way though, so just keep an eye on it.

As ^^^^, fit a genuine LR injector harness and clean the red ECU connector at the same time with electrical contact cleaner. Disconnect the battery before unplugging the ECU of course! The oil that is already in the loom leading to the ECU will keep seeping down to the ECU so you'll need to keep cleaning the ECU connector every few weeks for a month or two. After that it should stop.

The seepage is due to the o-rings at the end of the injection loom aging. Some people have managed to cure the seepage by renewing just these o-rings but the generally accepted cure it to swap out the injector loom. Its also generally accepted that the non genuine looms only last a year or so before leaking, hence the recommendation to only use a genuine one.

What if the o-rings on the injector loom plug are replaced at regular intervals, hopefully making the change before the seal is lost? I would be quite happy to fit them rather than risk getting oil in the ECU.

wouldnt help it would only stop a leak from rocker cover, not into connector
 
I am not sure this is completely true, but understand the principal, "If the loom is stripped back through the insulation and soldered them very tightly shrink wrapped the oil should not travel down the cable."
I have also been told not to alter the loom by cutting as it is very sensitive to length, resistance etc.

I would welcome your input with reference to this.

I have never disconnected the battery when cleaning plug or installing an ecu extension cable, as far as i know i have had no adverse problems, what would go wrong?
 
How do you get the ECU out? The earth lead on mine has to be disconnected otherwise it's in the way.

I thought it was LR's cunning way of ensuring the battery was disconnected.......

I can pull the ECU out at an angle. Perhaps the earth lead has been altered on my D2?

What can go wrong? I suppose there is a slight risk of shorting out a pin or two and blowing up the ECU. not sure without studying Haynes or RAVE if there's a permanent live to the red plug.

I've been thinking about this a bit more as I am thinking of changing the injector loom as a matter of course when I change my leaky rocker cover seal.

I previously asked why it is necessary to change the whole loom rather than just the leaky o-rings on the plug? Thinking further the wires with the oil in are the lower part of the loom that goes to the ECU but I never heard of that being changed. Correct me if I'm wrong but the oil isn't in the cores of the upper part of the loom it enters below due to the leaky seal and if the oil was in the upper part of the loom it wouldn't really matter, so I still can't understand why the loom under the rocker cover needs changing?
 
the loom under the rocker cover does suck up the oil and brakes down the loom its not just the o rings that cuase the problem its the injector harness aswell
 
Well the only comment I would make on this subject is that on 2 x TD5 I've replaced the blue plug/socket O-rings and had no further oil in the red ECU plug.
