We've recently bought a Land Rover TD5 99 reg and only noticed the day after that when started from cold when you pull away it has a tappity sound. When it gets to a normal temperature it's fine, this only happens on cold. Been told by a local garage it's the cam followers, we've had a full service and the garage bloke has told us to wait 7 days to see if there's an improvement as the old oil was so dirty. The chap seems genuine but can never tell with garages so I thought I'd put it up on here where I know I'll get an honest answer.

Also he quoted £600 to do the job if it's still knocking after 7 days, any advice would be great. Also would anyone on here be able to take on the job if it's still tappity in a week, I'm South Birmingham.

We're worried about causing more damage by driving it.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

My D2 TD5 makes a similar noise when cold. The throttle opening seems to affect the type of noise it makes. It doesn't sound serious and I know of others that sound exactly the same. Best advice is to avoid large throttle openings until warmed up. Warming up shouldn't take long - 2 to 3 miles.

presumably they mean lash adjuster (hydraulic tappet) err7233, simple enough job but you will need manual or guide to set timing etc

if it were mine, i`d live with it. i`ve had this problem before on previous engines and fretted about it. but experience has shown me its more a nuisance thing. this is as a delivery driver putting on average 200k miles on the engines.
