Ive tried searching but all i can find are which fluids are to be used. Not when they should be changed.
Ive just purchased my manual TD5 and done a full fluid change, of engine, box, tx box, and axles so im looking to know at what intervals all the fluids need changing again.
Thanks in advance
Daniel
Hi Daniel, to answer your question I need to know whether you intend to keep the vehicle a long time or not.
Allow me to explain: LR service interval levels, like all modern car manufacturers, want the car to look cheap to service for the initial buyer - the new car man if you like - whereas the actual needs of the vehicle for an owner that wants to achieve reliable, efficient operation are something different again.
Regarding oils they deteriorate over the miles but over time as well. So my approach is this:
Engine oil and filters every 6000 mls;
Main gearbox, transfer box and diffs every 12 months or 12,000mls whichever is the sooner. Let's face it oils are cheap by comparison to engines or 'boxes.
Long-life Coolant - every two years or sooner if you do any work on the cooling circuit. Long-life coolant has a tendency to eat aluminium parts, so I like to change this regularly so I can keep an eye on what's happening.
Brake fluid every two years. I use a Hawkeye to pump out the old brake fluid via the ABS pump.
The most basic answer to your question is: apply pro-active maintenance to your Discovery and you'll have a reliable efficient vehicle - do it by the book and you won't !!!
Good luck with your new toy.
