Hi Guys,

Have a td5 defender at the minute that is baffling me somewhat. On a few previous occasions it has refused to start, turns over fine but no fuel pump running and no engine/glow plug light come up on the dash. In the past a simple case of turning it off and back on has cured this up untill now.
It refuses to start, i have checked the ecu earths, changed the main and fuel pump relays and checked all the fuses and th eimmobiliser has previously been deactivated. When i try to read diagnostic codes with t4 it wont let me read the engine ecu but i can get into all other ecu's fine.

Anyone had this issue before?

Give all the fuses and relays wiggle. You may have corrosion on the contacts.

I've had the same problem on my disco 2 td5. No glow plug light and won't turn over. To get it to start I have to lock the car leave it for 10 seconds then try again and it starts. It's only happened about 3 times in a couple of months.... I thought it was something to do with the immobiliser, but haven't got to the bottom of it.

Ratty I've checked all the relay contacts and fuses-all are ok
As for it being immobiliser, I doubt it as its been de activated and this doesn't explain why I have no glow/engine light and why I can't get any communications to engine ecu with t4?

Yep I had this problem. TD5 110 Defender. Occasionally I'd jump in and switch on. No engine management light and no coil light but batt, oil etc lights OK (and yes temp gauge goes straight up to max). Engine would turn over no problem but wouldnt fire. I'd leave it 10 minutes and then everything would be OK, until last night when no amount of cursing or cajoling made a difference. Came on to this forum and spotted your post which led me the the ECU (I had been wiggling the fuses and relays in the main fuse box and had convinced myself that this was where the problem was). A quick tweak of the relays near the ECU and lights came on. Fired up and off I went. Hope that this is the end of the issue.......

Fair play lads. just came out of work to get in to my 110 TD5 Crew cab and exactly the same issue that was raised above, no engine check light, no coil light and temp straight to max. came across this thread on my phone sitting in the vehicle and wiggled the fuses and the relays and disconnected the ecu and reconnected it and hey presto lights back to normal!

well impressed lads cheers!

This glow plug problem is doing me in , do I wiggle the relays below the drivers seat or the ones in front of the gear stick ?
Where is the ecu ? Is this a wiring problem ? If any one texts me thier number I will call u back to discuss ,
Thank you in advance . Steven ,0776777617758

What are your symptoms Steven?

No coil / engine light and temp gauge goes into the red when cranking over, no fuel pump noise with ignition on?

Or

No coil / engine lights, temp gauge reads in normal position when cranking over, no fuel pump noise with ignition on?

Similar symptoms but the repairs are different, the first one is usually removing the yellow relays under the drives seat, clean, and plug in again, and check fuses in the black box located in front of the relays.

The second symptom, pretty much sucks, which is what I had on mine, if no communication via any diagnostics from the ECU, check earths, check ECU connection plugs x 2 for oil contamination as oil in some Td5's capillaries up through the injector loom all the way to the ECU and eventually shorts it, affects 10p engines but most should have been sorted by now. If the plugs are clear of oil, your ECU is probably dead.

I had this... played around with the yellow relays under the seat and the pump and glow lights would come to life...
Gradually this starting issue became worse over time... After a lot of searching I discovered that the wiring from the ECU to the Roll over switch located under the bonnet had gone black. This caused a resistance making the ECU think I had rolled over. Bypassed the roll over switch and it was all sorted...
Ive been meaning to remove the switch from the bulkhead and relocate it under the seat.... but no got around to it yet.... Its been 3 years since I fixed it.. lol

Hi I have a similar problem heat up to max when the engine is cold and it just cut out wilst driving now no power going the the ignition no battey or on plug light us to tempicher gage
