Evening,

Got a problem with my TD5 90 that is doing my head in!

Radiator is only getting warm near the top hose, Bottom hose and 3/4 of the rad are stone cold. Heater is also stone cold.

If I bleed the system, I can get the heater to be warm for about 3 miles... then the same problem again. Last night I managed to get rad warmish all over, but the bottom hose was still stone cold.

Also, When I'm on the motorway it overheats... Now I can only presume this is because there is no water flow into the radiator to dissipate the heat?

I've changed the Water Pump and Thermostat but I've still got the problem....

Any suggestions are very welcome!

Don't have a TD5 so a bit of a guess but it sounds like big airlock or duff pump, if it was thermostat stuck shut then rad would be cold and it would overheat but heater would work. Did you do anything to it before snag appeared? Have you tried back flushing rad, heater and block in case you have a blockage? Checked all hoses are ok and not internally delaminating?

Cheers James, I'm pretty sure the pump is ok and I did have HGF rattling round in my brain but I just can't convince myself that it is the problem as it doesn't quite add up?

Give the rad and heater matrix a good power flush in both directions until you get clean water. If you're sure the pump and stat are good then its looking like an HG failure. As Ratty says does the top hose feel rock solid with the engine warm and running? Get a simple "sniff" test done at any local indy garage. It will quickly confirm if the HG has failed and only costs a tenner. A lot of garages will do the test for a packet of biscuits.
