Hi all,
I have an issue with starting in the mornings, it has become progressively worse. First it ran a bit rough but started. Then when I turned the key it would go but died again. Now I have to start twice and it runs rough at first.

I have tried purging before starting but that doesn't make it any better.

I have done the injector seals and washers, cleaned the red plug and changed the loom.

I am thinking glow plugs next (although that should not effect it that much if I have to believe most D2 owners), one way valve in the fuel filter housing.

Or shall I just bite the bullet and do the fuel pressure regulator? Any other possibilities?
 
First of all rule out the air bleed valve in the rear outer port of filter's head(WJN500110) cos it's cheap and it would be good to see if there aren't any crank signal fault codes logged and read the injector balances rather than replaceing expensive parts like the FPR which IMO would not cause starting issues, the glow plugs can have diffefrent effects from one engine to another depending on the compression of each so rule those out too just to be sure, unplug one and measure for voltage in the lead when you turn ignition on and if there is voltage measure each plug's resistaance against the head, a good one should have around 0.9 Ohm

No fault codes logged, did look at injector balance but can't remember what they read (I know, I am getting old) will read them again.
What is acceptable for the injector inbalance?

Will try glow plugs (I did get new ones already) and air bleed valve as well as they are the cheap bits indeed.

I am hoping it isn't the FPR as it is a difficult one (with my big hands) and expensive one.
 
Check also that the glow plug relay is working.
Even though it looks just like an ordinary automotive relay, it's a bit more special than that, it has a 70 Amp switching capability (instead of the normal 40 amp).
Replacement part number YWB100560 or AMR3773. They ain't that cheap either, about 15 to 18 quid each.

Just checked, It seems fine, it is well within 8 sporadic and under +/-4/ All around -2 to 2 sometimes a 3 or a 4

I will check the relay as well, while it isn't cheap for a relay, it won't break the bank.
 
OK all glow plugs were shot so they have been replaced. The caps were rotten so need to see how I am going to replace them as it seems you can't buy them separately.

Haven't checked the relay yet as I was doing a few other things.

First impression is that the starting issue is still there but less fierce. I start to have a feeling this is not a one issue problem.

Bleeding valve didn't arrive yet, so that is next.
 
Tested the relay, all fine. Didn't put the bleeding valve in yet although it did arrive, as the Disco suddenly decided to start perfectly again???

Now it is 9 degrees instead of 2 degrees but can this be such a difference?

I still like to replace the caps of the plugs as they seem dodgy to me.

What else can this be? This rules out most thing except plugs or am I wrong?

we did, all the old ones were not working so they were replaced, this didn't make a difference for the starting.

The caps were falling apart and we put them on as good as we could. I will get the caps from a breaker as I think they are part of the engine loom?

Could this be the issue? I mean it is 9 degrees outside instead of 2.
