Hi all! I need some advise!

My td5 auto was cruising at 75 on the motorway and when I let the throttle off it gave a braking effect then freed itself. At the next roundabout, there was a squealing noise. Then as I went to move off it juddered and at about 30mph it was fine. Next traffic lights there was a ' buggered' bearing noise. I limped the 2 miles at 20mph to my bros's house.

I called the AA as luckily I had foresight! He reckoned chances are it's the bearing that hold the balance weight on the back of the gearbox. A big metal doughnut. The box is leaking like a landrover so I guess it may have run dry?!

Questions are, is it a twit to change the bearing ( I'm pretty good at mechanics but never done much with landy's), has anyone ever had this problem and any other ideas on what I could check to see if it's a problem?

Many thanks in advance.

O.

I cant understand what balance weight do you mean:confused: ...could you upload a pic maybe? ... didnt you confuse the handbrake drum with a doughnut?, cos i can't imagine other big metal doughnut at the rear of the gearbox...see the attachment cos that's what i suppose your problem is(quite common) and the noise and braking might have came from the handbrake shoes if a spring has snapped there

quite likely thats what he does mean ,you could slacken off hand brake adjuster anti clockwise with 17mm socket front bottom of the back plate, feel for up/down movement in drum (hand brake off obviously)and check oil level of transfer box ,rear out put bearing and seal are easy to change ,new bearing stc1130 are less than 5£

Hi fellas and thanks for the advise..

I been so busy with work I havent had a chance to look at it yet bar moving it around the drive.

I tried (just to see) what would happen if I put the H-L in to neutral and engaged it into D.

It wasnt making a huge noise but sounded off and grauchy. Coupled with a spin down the road at 20mph I could hear it too..

I guess that means its the gearbox? Frankly if anyone wants a project Id let her go. Shes pretty mint and covered 110k.

Any thoughts or tests I can do when my broken finger is ready?

I bow to your awesomeness..

O.
