hi i've got a td5 2001 with air con all working fine then two days later no air con!! i had it recharged blow cold for two mins then blew the fuse.. so i had an auto electrician look at it and he said the compressor has gone?? do the compressors just go like that?? are they mendable as there about 300 notes!! am i right in saying the outer pulley should spin then when the air co is on the inner part should start spinnig??mines not! just wondered if anyone had come across this before and or had any ideas?? many thanks

When the aircon is OFF, the outer pulley rotates, when the aircon is ON the clutch engages in the compressor and the inner pulley spins at the same speed as the outer.

For the fuse to go, theres a direct short to ground. I suppose its possible theres an "internal" short in the compressor.............but before condeming that, follow / trace the loom from the compressor plug, you will see it runs around the side of it and round where the 2 pipes are at the back, it is not uncommon for this loom to "chaff" through on the pipes as its not routed very well from new. It also continues around by the front engine lifting bracket and sort off underneath the front cover of the engine, can wear here to.

If it has worn through, then when the wire +12v contacts the metal of the compressor etc = direct short to ground on the compressor power supply = fuse blows.

Worth a look "imo"

IMO the compressor itself doesnt blow the fuse.........he is controlled by the ATC ECU via ECM through a relay by an elecrtic clutch part of the compressor........it has a diode in parallel which if is burnt is blowing the fuse.

First of all to know where to begin which fuse was blown....(nr6)the 10A one(we are speaking of the engine bay fusebox dont we)?

in the unlikeky ken that it was a fuse from the passenger compartment then the plan is changing.

thanks for the replies at the moment i don't know which fuse it is will have to check as i didn't ask the auto electrician. i will find out first. i presume it might be the one in the engine bay because when it first happened i checked the one on the drivers side which was fine. they didn't say a fuse had gone first only that they refilled with gas then the fuse went thats when there electron said it was the compressor itself..
