i am looking for a facelift hse model freelander!

why are the v6 2k cheaper than a td4 is it just the mpg?

seen a 2005 v6 for sale with only 39k on the clock!

is there anything you can do to a v6 to make them do more to the gallon like you can with the td4?

thanks lee

There is a reason for the V6 being cheaper to buy. The reason is it will be far more expensive to run unless you do a tiny mileage and see the car as a form of DIY. You should also be a very competent mechanic to own a V6.

I'd have the V6 over the TD4 anyday but I only do 5K a year. Don't let people put you off a V6 if you don't mind the thirst. I get 22-25 mpg. As to which one is best? The V6 is much faster than the TD4 and much more refined. As for costs of ownership? Both can be troublesome and unless you are a keen experienced diyer repair cost can be high!!

Bear in mind Nodge is one of these very competent mechanics I have mentioned!

Ok you got me ;)
If you are paying for repairs both can be really expensive to sort!! And nether are fault free!!

I think we can safely say this goes for all Freelanders in general. Quite alot of us here do at least our own servicing, and many can do and have done the most serious repair and overhaul procedures by themselves.

I never touched my last few cars.

this one is like my hobby :)

and with it being a Freelander there's plenty to keep me busy.

as Danny Glover once said "i'm getting too old for this sh*t"

Td4 is far more expensive for a reason.

I'd expect to get 200k from a maintained Td4 before the engine required strip to repair. A Kv6 i'd expect issues from 36k+, but then when it comes to rover engines in FL1, im a pessimist...

Most KV6 failures are attributed to lack of maintenance and understanding!! How many owners ignore the owners hand book and leave a simple task like checking the coolant level untill they go on a long journey? If a simple O ring sealing the thermostat should leak and a regular level check is'nt made then the cooling system will airlock with the inevitable HGF as a result!! All caused by a simple lack maintenance!!

My old man had a rover sterling with a kv6! All I can say is it's a beautiful engine! The only issues he had was the fan was on and stayed on! So we just took the fuse out and it never over heated! Great engine aslong as you look after it :)

I've been saying the same thing for 10 years !! I have 2 cars fitted with a KV6 and one on an engine stand waiting to go into a hotted up classic!! It's a lovely engine!!

I agree with this. Far too many peeps moan about problems which relate to simple checks not being done. No water = overheating engine at a later date.

v6 is more powerful than the td4 in a 0 to 60mph race. Quieter drive too. Fool consumption is the big issue. You pay more for LR v6 parts but similar rover v6 parts are cheaper and may also fit. I have a v6. Nice ride and my tinkering skills have improved considerably during ownership. If I was choosing one to buy it wouldn’t be a v6 unless I had a lot of money. The diesels make more sense as they’re cheaper to run. If you’re on a low yearly mileage like me then it would take a long time to recover the difference of a more eggspensive diesel. But you gain a bit more reliability. Earlier FL1’s int much difference in price these days as you know your buying a 10+ year old car, so eggspect a few issues. Watch out for v6’s hitting the 6th year service (72k miles) which is when they suggest the cam belts should be changed. All 3 of them. Book time is 5.2 hours so it’s not cheap. Managed to do mine myself but it did take a bit longer as I’d never done a belt before. Reliability wise the v6 is ok, but make sure you check water level and get it hot on a test drive if you choose to buy one. Check auto is ok and don’t buy one without proven service history and a fist full of receipts.

I agree with this. I've just had to swap the engine on my V6 which doesn't sound good but it seems to have suffered HGF for the second time!! I'm pretty certain the that the HGF was caused by the previous owner finding a leak and using K Seal to "fix" it but all that stuff does is block side tank rads and oil coolers!! As for the 2K price difference? It will take a lot of miles to break oven on fuel costs alone!!
