Hi, and welcome.

Without hearing it I couldn't really comment on the rattle noise, but it's highly unlikely to be the timing chain which is not a routine replacement item like on engines which use belts.

Someone else will hopefully be able to discuss rattles - what mileage? what age?

do the timing chains on the td4 need replacing ?

as mentioned :) .. not generaly ..
i.e. it's not a service item ..
i expect on an engine strip-down / re-build it might be advisable .. depending on wear

~~~
i had a buzz-rattle in the cab at idle .. vanished off-idle ..
turned out to be the door trim .. 'n needed to tighten the trim screws to stop it ..
i imagine 'idle' could make anything loose rattle .. in engine bay .. in car interior ..
couple of hgvs i drove had caterpiller engines ..
on idle .. there was a sound from the engine that sounded like a tin can full of ball bearings being shaken ..
as soon as a 'load' was applied .. the sound would vanish ..
turned out to be the overhead cam chain .. and was 'normal' ..
same sound from a td4 would be cause for concern
what's yer rattle sound like .. metal on metal .. metal on plastic .. ?
is it definitely from the engine bay .. ?
maybe record it .. post mp3 / yootoob ..
'n someone here may let you know if your motor is about to :boom: .. or not
Hello
There is a vibration damping pulley on the end on the crank shaft, for the aux drive belt.
The pulley is made from a metal ring on the shaft, a big rubber bit and a metal outer bonded to the rubber.
When the rubber splits the pulley makes a banging noise. It sounds like something internal is broken, like maybe the chain banging around.
The noise on mine only happened at tick over and went away with revs.
Hope this helps
:)
same on my old one with 173000 on the clock it started to rattle and turned out to be the crankshaft pully when I did mine I changed the belts at the same time to save another job you will need somthing to stop the pully turning round I made up a tool for it the bolt is hard to get out
