OK, this tortured me for a few weeks. I thought I would put this up as a seperate thread for others.

A couple of weeks after I got my 2004-2006 Freelander TD-4 I took it to a local garage for an oil change. Routine, matter of course stuff. They gave it the once over and got a clean bill of health. Sorted.
Soon after, it put out a puff of smoke on startup. This was in the middle of the bad weather so it could have been anything. I paid little attention but it got worse, much worse.
The smoke was now a billowing cloud with a lumpy/rough first spin up. Once it "cleared its throat" it seemed fine. Quite embarrassing.
This smoke seemed to only be cold start in the morning but soon became anytime the car stood for any period of time.
Now most of you who have encountered this or read about it will get the 'blue smoke - white smoke' question and what it means for each. In practicality, I didnt think it was so easy to tell if it fell into each category. Even the white smoke has a blueish tinge IMHO.
So, to eliminate all the possibilities that don't cost an arm and a leg, I did the EGR bypass and the BMW PCV. No joy, still smokes.
So, off to get professional help. I went to a guy local called the "Landyman" in the North West. Paul did a leakback test as he figured it was injectors. His conclusion was 2 & 3 needed changing. A week later he changed No. 1 aswell. I asked him to swap out the glow plugs (as they are cheap and he is in there anyway) just to be sure.
This morning it cranked over with no smoke and no lumpy running. So I'm chuffed, it's running spot on and plenty of grunt.

I've stuck up a video of the smoke, hope it might be of help in the future.

I'm having similar problems to you at the moment.I had a leak back test done and have
2+3 way out of sync.

Looking to getting them changed but the garage that did the test want a stupid amount of money. Who is this "landyman"? How are his prices

His name is Paul, http://www.landrover-garage-northwest.co.uk/

Costs.
Diagnostics and flow check.
Supply and fit 3 injectors, 4 glow plugs changed.
Fitted BMW PCV and EGR bypass ( I supplied those two parts).
Checked out a couple of rattles and noises.
£650 all in.

I think 2 injectors supplied and fitted is £380-400.

Be careful if you change them yourself. Snapping an injector or dropping washers will bring a world of pain.....
If you know what you're doing, I'm sure you could save a few Bob.

Hmmmm, that 1 hour 20 from me.

If DCV don't sort out my issue, I may be calling him!!

I still think my injectors need changing, DCV says not.
