Hi all, long time no visit and that was all good for me!

130k on the clock and I have just started on a high load engine problem. Starting is a bit crap again too.

Getting going is sluggish if not reluctant, and when you try giving it a bit of boot to get going more often than than not (now) it makes a load of knock and smoke.

If I get the revs past 2.5k it clears up and at spees it is fine now loss of power ect. No warning lights.

Egr mod, arch pump, fuel rail sensor mod and maf have all been done within 25k miles.

Any pointers welcome before I start ripping it apart!

If I get the revs past 2.5k it clears up

sticking turbo-vane vacuum solenoid ?
i.e. vanes are at the wrong angle for lower revs .. but ok for the higher revs

~~~~~~~~
the bmw vortex oil separator still uses the original valve system ..
'n that valve would still gunk up 'n stick .. if not cleaned out once in a while
had this a couple of times over the years,
as hd3 suggests , turbo vane actuator sticking, or i would certinly be looking in this area, mine usually cleared itself after stopping and letting engine cool, harsh acceleration usually caused the problem ,
get under and lubricate/exersise the linkage
Right on john,
Split hose off of the what i believe is that actuator!
Wish i had read yer post earlier as i was a while looking!
I had the car from PZ to liskeard and sure that it could not be serious as the car was still pulling at ninety.
Removes all sensors I could think of and had a good spray with electroclean, crankcase off- cleaned, afore mentioned vacum solenoid removed- cleaned. All so far looked good so I followed the hoses about and spotted a couple behind the egr. Lower one went to egr (blanked) top one was split bout an inch back. Cut him short and slipped back on.
Just waiting for a road test but i am reasonably confident!
took the landy out again today, and it is still doing it.
a couple of times though, it just did not build any revs at all with my foot all the way to the floor, the only way that i could get it going was to wang up the revs and ride the clutch, just no low end power.
once it was going it was the same in so far as if you give it full throttle in mid range you get loads of juddering smoke and knock.
a thought occurred to me- is it possibly the clutch? gears are not the easiest to select but not a lot is 'right' with the old girl- 130K will do that i spose!
arch pump seems strong, and had been replaced at about 105k (preventative) fuel filter was at the same time.
hoses all look good (and at least two of them are new!)
fuel filter tomorrow then?
