TD4 intercooler to manifold pipe

TD4 Auto (2003)

On td4 the tube that connects the intercooler to manifolfd has two types, the first one is one piece:

The other type has a join in the middle with a lead coming off.

I have the join in the middle but where the lead should be attached there is nothing?
What does this lead do? and is it important!!!! :eek:
My Hippo runs fine with no trouble so far!

what do y'mean by 'nothing' ?
hopefully it's not an empty threaded hole ..

there should be a sensor in there .


What does this lead do? and is it important!!!!

attaches to the air-intake sensor .. that should be screwed in to that middle plastic pipe ..

'important' ? .. well generally if the sensor is kaput ..
the ecu defaults the reading to -5degreesC .. which means ..
the ecu will assume there is more air-mass available .. therefore more oxygen ..
and will allow more fuel to the injectors ..
so if the intake temp is above -5C .. the engine will overfuel .. leading to ..
potential low mpg and higher quantity of black smoke out the exhaust ..

the versions that had no temp sensor in the intercooler hose ..
took that air-intake temp via the maf sensor ..

the maf sensor lies just after the air-filter .. and before the turbo intake
that hose sensor lies after the turbo air-output ..
therefore an ecu that's been programmed to expect post-turbo air temps ..
will expect a higher temp reading .. than the other type ( i would think )

The cable is connected to the air-temperature sensor.

Without it the EDU will have to operate on a default setting, which will not be ideal for all circumstances and will probably result in lower mpg than it could be.

That cable is probably just hanging down under the oil-filter housing out of sight.

Have a good look or perhaps you may need to drop the engine undertray to find it.

It's unlikely that a previous owner will have completely removed it.

It's too dark for me to go and look now, but I'll check tomorrow where the cable comes from, and the routing on it's way to the sensor.

The air sensor were fitted on a late 2003, onwards so wonder if the pipe has been replaced with the wrong one at some point this is the one with out sensor Turbocharge Intercooler To Inlet Manifold Hose Freelander TD4 2001 To 2003 End At Vin 3 A279833 so have a look at your vin number.

Should have said;

I have the sensor in the pipe but there is no cable attached to the sensor.

I will give it a good torching too tomorrow and see it I can spot any leads towards the back of the engine/under tray.

Interesting point about the year change, could be replacement hose that had sensor fitted and not required.

My VIN is SALLNABE23A289____ so its a 2003 model.

Sensor in that pipe was introduced at 2004MY so yours won't need the sensor being a 2003MY.

Therefore you won't need it - I seem to recall LR Only supply the later level hose now with the sensor
 
My model is Oct 2003 with serial number 289---.
So I take it there is no requirement for this sensor?

Will still get around her tomorrow and report back.

With your vin number it will have a sensor as late 2003 models had them fitted yours is 3A289 and the last of the non sensors were 3A279833

Had a good look in the engine bay today and can't see any spare cables.

I did note that the hose has a part number sticker on it, this indicates it has been replaced. Hopefully, it has been replaced by a newer version and does not require the lead?

Looking at other pics on int'net I can see the lead should run down then back but no sign on mine.

Well she still works after all my probing and pulling.

Whilst your vin number should indicate it needs the newer hose maybe due to it being on the change period it should have the older one but when somebody has replaced the hose they went off the vin number and not matched what was there.
The other thought is if the sensor was not connected would it flag up a mil light on dash? so, then if some one on here could disconnect the plug on models that have the sensor fitted and let you know if it flags up a mil light then it could prove that yours should not have the sensor, just a thought.
