Changed mine a couple of months ago along with LP fuel pump. Both pump and filter had broken away from the mounting Brkt due to the pop rivets corroding, also the filter seizes in the plastic outer housing and can be a right sod to push out. When you fit the new filter apply grease to the filter before fitting ready for the next time (60,000 miles).

Right am confused now so is there 2 filters on the td4 ? Mines has 1 under the bonnet next to the fuse box but cant find this 1 ?

Funny you should say that. When I just ordered mine the guy asked which one I wanted, the one in the engine bay or the one behind the rear drivers side wheel.

The one I ordered is the one that is behind the splash panel behind the rear drivers side wheel.

I don't know if there is another one in the engine bay on my 2006 freelander, but some body here will confirm soon.

What year is your freelander ????

no there isn't .. ( i.e. td4 engine )

although there is a small micromesh filter on the h.p. pump ..
be part of the fuel pressure regulator ..

" There is a microfilter in the inlet to the high pressure pump which has been known to become partially clogged causing erratic performance, loss of power and engine cutting out. Remove the HP regulator to access it."

not sure what vehicle year / engine type has the main f.filter in the engine bay

Seem to remember that pre 2003 TD4's had pump in tank and filter under bonnet and later models had the LP pump and filter under the O/S/R wheel arch like mine.

The filter in the link you posted is the correct filter for the 'wheel-arch position' filter which actually is 2003 - 2006 not 1998 - 2006.

I can't read the makers name on it but it is likely to be either Mann or Mahle. No problem both good makes.

Thanks Sing,

One place I phoned this morning wanted to sell me a bripart one so I refused the offer after reading reports of not being very good on here.

The "freelander 1998-2006" is only reference to it being a FL1 and not a FL2, and the add does state from which VIN number.
The filter and pump actually changed part way through 02MY, that is why it is vital to use your VIN number ordering parts.

I just checked in my spares cupboard and I have a Mann one - made in the Czech Republic, and in the spares box in the car - a Mahle one made in Austria.

I think the problems would possibly be with those from the 'Land of Chopsticks'.
Lets hope not , freelanders are being made there from next year :D

Received the fuel filter in the post this morning. It's a Mahle KL-232

That's the one!

Now you just have to fit it!

Be prepared for rusted, seized bolts - corroded 'pop'-rivets - earth terminal corroded and fallen off.

The fuel pipes are easily unclipped and you are best to have the whole unit on the bench before you try getting the filter out of the plastic housing.

It'll probably be as tight as hell due to salt and crud sticking to the aluminium casing.

I coated the casing and the pump in grease before I put it all back together.

Good luck and enjoy the job!
