TD4 Crunching into third gear! :(

Just a wee update, Crunchy McNocrunch is still going strong. Haven't changed the ATF yet but will be doing some other stuff to her soon and will do it then. Mind you my current plans will probably kill her dead, I'm going to give it a 50mm lift and some big tyres so I can do some off roading, I went to look at a Disco 2 and hated it so sticking with my Freelander for now.
Many thanks to the guys for the great advice.

Excellent mate ! well chuffed - you may be better to stay on ATF. Dexron 3 is what I would go for.
Be careful if you increase the tyre diameter though for off roading as you will raise the already high overall gear ratio. lift sound good though am thinking of that too, I just need to look into the overall changed in suspension geometry.

The FL1 drives so much better than the D2, which really shows its age.
The D3 drives very nicely, even by FL1 standards. However the D3 can become a money pit, which is why I returned to a Freelander. That and fact that I needed to release some of the cash tied up in the thing.
I'd have another D3, but only if it was a cheap low miles HSE V8, with an LPG conversion.
Until then, the Freelander does everything I need a car to do.

I picked up this 2002 TD4 with 115k miles for only £950 so not overly worried about harming it while having fun. I know the bigger wheels and off roading will probably result in a new clutch at some point, not to mention the body damage but fun must be had! :p
As for the body lift, I saw a thread where someone made a lift themselves, now that is an interesting thought.
A D3 is very high up my 'wants' list but not at the kind of money they need both for buying and running.

lol :)
sounds great fun and at that price - hey ! why not - ! I would be very tempted by the lift but not the tyre size increase. It really is night and day off road if you alter the gearing to a higher ratio. It can make it #'usable# to #not usable# - really.....

At the minute my wheels are probably slightly under size at around 26" diameter. I'm looking to go to around 28 - 29" as from what I've seen the biggest issue for a Freelander off road is ground clearance. Everything is a compromise, I just hope I'm not going too far.

I was working at Audrey again today fitting a Renault thermostat into the top hose (great job BTW working a treat) so decided to replace the fluid in the gearbox. This was the first change since putting the ATF in, so I drained it and refilled with more ATF. I figured it was going better with ATF than it did with whatever oil was in it before so didn't see any reason to use anything else.
Anyway I poured the old oil into a container and watched out for shiney bits. When I got near the bottom I saw quite a few wee flecks so there is obviously some damage done but hopefully it won't get any worse. The car is no longer my toy but my wife's daily driver so the 50mm lift kit (which arrived today :)) will have to keep for the next project.

Holy thread resurrection batman! The new toy has a crunchy 3rd gear so hoping ATF flush will help. Just wandering how your box is getting on on the hands of the wife?

Sorry mate, no idea what it is like now. I sold it a few months ago.
BTW after the initial flush I put more ATF into it, I figured it was lovely and smooth with ATF so why change it. I'll never know if that was the right choice though.

The ATF wouldn't have done any damage to an already worn box. It's probably still going just as well as when you had it Ali. ;)

Just read this whole thread...I need to get out more...

Great info regards ATF and other things.... An education, just missing the beers and crisps and the buxom bar maid
down the 'Black Swan' or wherever sad MOFO's like us would meet to talk **** about Freelanders....obviously, I would only be able to attend if my daughter dropped me off in my(I mean her) TD4.

Will think about doing a gearbox flush of my own when I get the chance. No untoward symptoms as of yet but I just can't help myself. Think my TD4 (2004 Facelift) has a Getrag gearbox, reading things on here.....funnily enough I know the family that own that company.....They are obviously 'Sausage Munchers' and very nice people indeed....

The mother looks like that 'Frau Rosa Klebb' from 007's 'From Russia with Love'......but not likely to try to stab you/poison you/generally try to kill you.

Errr, Just remembered my VW LT35 workshop van has a bit of a crunch when changing up into second...Just wondering if the ATF 'trick' might help with that issue? Nothing ventured nothing gained but it IS German after all...

Shouldn't do any harm and if it works than Happy Days. :)

Advice from an expert. ;)
i use dexron 2 or 3 from local motor factors ,and have done for a long while, if the one your using has helped gear change stick with that ,different oils effect how baulk ring can grab and clean oil from the gear cone, if yours works its ok

Cheers Bro', Hopefully it'll be okay....

Also, checked out your avatar earlier, pressing buttons etc for no reason....saw your avatar fart, fall forward and then sh&t into the 'bowl'... I laughed, in a nervous way...its funny....You will probably here from my lawyers..... :)
