Td4 clutch

MY 2001 TD4 CLUTCH IS SLIPPING UNDER LOAD BADLY SO MORE OR LESS CONVINCED IT NEEDS NEW ONE ??

ANY HELP WITH THIS (REPAIR COST IN WREXHAM ETC)

If you change the lot because it makes sense to do do then you ate looking at about £800 to inc a dual mass flywheel. It can be false economy not to change clutch as well as the flywheel and also release mechanism. The gearbox has to come off and IRD as well do a couple of hundred in labour.

Educate me. What's a dual mass fly wheel? And why such an expensive clutch system, are they a weak point that go often?

Its kind of a split flywheel with a damper type device between the 2 halves - many cars now use them in place of a solid flywheel and they are notorious for going wrong, with some models you can get a conventional solid flywheel as a replacement as dual mass ones are stupidly expensive.

No they last quite well 100k plus but it's a biggish job getting it out.

You really must change the release mech as that's a weak point and only costs about £50 but gearbox out job so false economy not to do it. Clutch and pressure plate par for the course - £80 ish - Flywheel - I bought one new from eBay £330 - glad I did the bold one was pretty cruddy and loose - clutch is lovely now.

Yes it's expensive but if you can get the box and IRD out yourself then just change what is needed.

Lots of cars are like this now - its bad news really.

I believe you can get a solid flywheel mod for a bit less but am told it puts stress on the transmission components after - makes sense as the original is flywheel cushions the drive take up.

Thanks for that. Mines an 03, and to me the clutch pedal seems to bite low. Some have said' that's just how they are' it doesn't slip or cause a problem so at what miles do these clutch's go at?

A clutch should last 100k miles plus at least - on my last 2 cars with me doing most if the miles they were both going strong at near 200k each. A Freelander tends to work and perhaps tow etc do who knows but I would say 100k is reasonable. The weak bit is the release mech as its hydraulic and buried in the bell housing. Mine failed at 90k so I had the whole lot done. Pedal was low after it for a few hundred miles but is perfect now.

My advice for what it's worth is if you are keeping it or working with it you best do the full job.

depending on what it has done its its life (towing/offroading/motorway) pretty common for these to go at around 60k. as angeloc says get it all done, the clutch parts are cheap but its a big job so change as much as you can while its out. get the flywheel checked before you buy one, they are not as prone to go as much as the vw ones. i had mine done in my 04 hse at 59k and it was 600 quid at a decent local specialist, dealer quoted 1400!!!

Yes if you have the luxury of time and a garage that won't charge you for leaving a job on half check the flywheel - I needed mine on the road quickly do bought the lot before starting - as it turned out the flywheel looked pretty bad compared with the new one so glad I had a spare ready.

I got mine through an eBay shop - half the price of the LE one and a good recognized make so happy.

I was told that GSF spares do one as well at a reasonable price and often have 20% off sakes on their website.

My thinking was that the cost of labour is almost the cost of the flywheel so if I had just replace the clutch parts and this put strain on the flywheel during bedding in then it all had to come out again. Also the clutch plate runs against the flywheel and so a worn flywheel will chew up a new plate - I think it's best to have two new surfaces wearing equally together as that way the clutch should last longer.

So your clutch doesnt slip and bites low?


Bleed it.


The connection between the master and slave is a quick release and they are well known for dragging in air over time. It causes the pedal to feel soft at the top end of travel and bite low as it feels the clutch is dragging.

Its so common that Land Rover even documented that there is an 'acceptable amount of air drawn into the system over time'.

Bleeding is easy to do to.

Thanks for all replys,anyway have booked in to a very good landrover specialist in oswestry,they are charging me 1000 squid for the complete clutch and fitting,seems a lot and could probably get a little cheaper but this garage (MACDONALDS LANDROVER OSWESTRY) will do an exellent job as i have used them before (new turbo) and the after sales is exellent,worth a few quid more for a decent job i think, would recomend MACDONALDS to anyone who cares about their landy , will post again when clutch all done

often the dual mass flywheels can cause rubbish of it to get into the starter motor then there is another problem
