Hi all.

My TD4 clutch has developed a strange intermittent fault. Sometimes the pedal goes compl, etely and the clutch feels very sharp - in that you move the pedal in and out as it only moves a little, and the clutch bites. If I put my foot under the clutch pedal and pull it up to the normal position it starts to work with full travel again. The reservoir is full of fluid and there is no sign of any leaks from the system. The clutch pedal has had a squeek (creaky noise when the pedal moves) since I bought the car in March.

Any help or advice gratefully received. Thanks.

I have just had the exact same fault fixed on my '04 TD4 and it's common, use the search and you will findoads of threads documenting the same problem.

Most commonly it's the clutch master cylinder inside of which is a rubber diaphragm which over time can let fluid move at the wrong time - hence the clutch pedal stuck down to the floor.

I had mine replaced as part of a service but the part is approx. £100 and is sealed and most threads suggest it's an easy diy job.

That replacement should solve your problem if not then it could be the slave cylinder which is unfortunately in the bell housing and requires the removal if gearbox etc and most seem to do clutch and dual mass flywheel at sametime, which is obviously quite costly.

Do the master cylinder first and see how you get on, here's a link to my thread about the same problem -

Good luck

Thanks for your response Si, I was a little concerned that it could be the clutch or slave cylinder which requires major surgery on both vehicle and wallet!

As the clutch pedal has had the creaky sound since March, it looks as though you are spot on. I will order a master cylinder and throw it on the old girl.

Thanks again,

Dave

No probs bud, I did it with the mindset that it's the cheapest and most accessible part to rule out first - it seems that 95% of these turn out to be the master cylinder so fingers crossed for you!

CLUTCH/DUALL MASS ,,,,,hi ive a 01 td4 freelander which i love but has cost me some money lately with new turbo Grrrrrrrr , now ive a problem with clutch or gearbox , ive noticed dat wen my foot is no de clutch pedal i feel a bad vibration or shudder and wen i put it in gear i rest my foot on de clutch gently and de shudder feels a lot worse and im gettin a funny noise now wen drivin , ive bn told it cud be the dualmass flywheel which im hopin its not as will break me bank , can anyone please help cheers lads :)

re: original poster problem, then always worth a quick look underneath for fluid leak from the slave - you might need to take the engine under tray off to be sure. If it's leaking out of the slot in the bellhousing bottom then it's an (expensive) slave job and the master could well be ok.
