TD4 Auto Gearbox Issues

We have just had the auto box replaced in our 53 plate Freelander due to loosing reverse in the original box

New auto box has a very smooth change and all 5 gears are being indicated as working BUT we seem to be running out of go at the top end

On a motorway test last night at 84 mph it the rev counter was redlining ! at 75 mph it was 4000 rpm

Although I don't drive this car often (its the wifes) I feel that this is not right but I really could do with some information before I approach the garage

Can anyone help with rpm to speed figures for the td4/auto and or do you have any idea what may be causing this

After spending a lot of money on a recon box I just want it right, The garage are being really helpful but I could do with some hard facts

(Can't see it at the moment so this is from memory)

If your loosing power then it could be down to split turbo hoses which is something to look for. This causes power loss from the turbo. Just a guess as the auto fitter would have had their paws all over the engine bay. Has the power been missing since the auto change, or has the power decreased from what it was, after the auto change?

There is no loss of power the engine pulls well through the rev range but it almost feels like the gearing is wrong as it runs out of puff at 85 and the engine is then revving at 4k+
The garage think it may be a faulty valve block ?
It used to cruise comfortably at 75 but even that seems very harsh on the engine since the box change
 
Not sure about valves. I guess it could be something electric on the valve side. Or even a sensor reading incorrectly.

Since you mention gearing, I wonder if the auto is locking up. At lower temps the auto won't lock up as soon as normal, to aid the warm up process. Also you could check the P number on top of the gearbox. This will tell you if they've fitted a Td4 geared auto or another one. I don't know if the v6 geared auto will fit on a Td4, but checking the number would clear this up. It starts with a P and has some numbers after it. Located on top of the auto. I doubt this is the cause. someone else with a Td4 could tell you their P part number to compare (mine is a v6).

They could do a diagnostic on the auto to check sensros are reading correctly. Also get into the auto's computer to see if it comes up with any error messages. Like sensor reading low etc.

Just a bit of guesswork to get you started. Make sure they have it back and know exactly what is wrong, and show it to them. If they have another Td4 auto compare them.
 
Are you absolutely sure the box is actually changing up to 5th gear?

4000rpm in 4th gear sounds like what you're getting.

4000rpm in 5th gear gives over 106mph!

Before I fitted a Synergy I could only pull 4000 in 5th on a downhill!

Freelander speedos are a bit optimistic so when you say you're getting 85 that would be about right as 4th gear gives 19.5mph/1000rpm so it would be doing 78mph + speedo error of at least 7% equals just a tad over 83mph.

I cruise on the autobahnen at 3000rpm which is 80mph (according to my sat-nav, which is much more accurate than the speedo)

Have another road test before going back to the garage and check how many change-ups the box is actually doing. Try selecting 4 instead of D and see what it does.

i was just thinking myself Singvogel that this would be the case as he is driving a auto pull the gear leaver over to the right and it is in either sports mode or tectronic keep pushing forward over 45 mph and see if it goes into 5th gear it should do if not problems are there
 
As mentioned drive at say 60 mph in auto with D selected by then should be in 5th for sure , put in manual mode (move lever to right) you will then be able to select next upshift by nudging levr forward , it will then show gear on dash display as either 4 or 5 if you get a drop in revs or no display of 5 then that will confirm your problem HTSH

ps if you are showing five and are definately revving high it could well be that 5th is not locking up and you are getting slip , you dont want to be doing that for long as it will cause gearbox damage

Well the ongoing saga of our gearbox continues....
After another gearbox and valve chest fitted we got the car back at the end of last week
although it is changing up into 5th gear on the dash and feels like its changing the whole car still feels like its revving way to high 3000 @ 70 !
We have lost total faith in the independent that it went too ( and dont want to go back there) and are now looking to find someone who really knows these vehicles to check it over for us
(Oh and when in park it shows reverse on the dash)
getting really ****ed off now

You sure the gear lever it set correctly? R on dash when it's in reverse means the gear lever is out of position, unless the sensors for the gear lever position are feked up. Could be the adjustment on the auto too but I int played with that bit.

Revving too high... is that beacuse it's in 4 rather than drive? Same as above, gear level not set propper. Try physically putting it in D and only allow it to tick over on revs while doing this. Then move gear lever to the right to put it in sport mode. Now push gear lever forward to put it in manual shift mode (steptronic) and also it will change to second gear whilst showing current physical gear number on the dash (should be 2 at this point). Now accellerate gently and push forward to change up, pull back to change down. Can you feel it select all forward gears including 5th?

Will try it again tonight with your suggestions but I am almost sure it is selecting all 5 gears
I have spoken to Ashcrofts this morning and am waiting to speak to their recommended agent to get it looked over by a auto specialist
My concerns really are :
1_ Have they fitted the correct box
2_ has it still got a fault or not set correctly
3_ Or is it something completely different

I am quite happy servicing my Disco etc but Autoboxes and electronics are out of my remit..

There's a P number on top of the auto. This will tell you if it's for a v6 or td4, by comparing on the web.
