TD4 Auto-Bad rumbling/Vibration

Just an up date on my Freelander. I have had the 2 main prop bearings replaced along with what the garage called the anti-vibration damper, its a big round rubber/metal unit thats between the 2 bearings and close to the VCU. The garage put the prop back and road tested the vehicle, but believe it or not, the problem was worse. They took the prop off again and noticed the other prop bearing at the front of the front prop was knackered, but you cannot just buy the bearing, you have to buy the complete front propshaft, which I have just bought this morning, so both props can go back on the vehicle next week. I can see why people take the props off and leave them off because of the huge expense these involve?
When I drove the vehicle this morning without the prop, effectively making it just a front wheel drive, again I noticed a droning like noise coming from the front underneath the vehicle, so although the props will be right, there is another underlying problem, which is yet to be diagnosed. The Landrover specialist I was talking to said it could be a "drivetrain" problem, or possible gearbox issues or I think he said IRS or IRC problems? Anyone got any suggestions what this droning noise could be? Could it be CV joints, which I am having replaced in 2 weeks with reluctor rings, or wheel bearings? The tyres have been checked and are all OK. It recently passed the MOT and nothing was noticed then but of course, if it is a gearbox problem, it would not affect the MOT anyway. The auto box seems smooth enough, although only this morning did i detect a slight "clunking" noise in between gears, but I'm not sure if this has got anything to do with having no props on? The list and expense goes on and on!

As far as I know there's not a bearing at the front of the prop the only thing there is the UV joint which can go. Again although you say the tyres are all good the droning noise could still be down to the tyres. I had brand new tyres fitted to the back of my freelander as soon as they were on thats when the droning noise started, I put up with it for a year until I changed all four tyre's a few weeks ago, I now have no droning noise or vibration what so ever.

I think your going to end up spending a lot of money for no reason at all. Like you I listened to the garage who said my prop bearings had gone £300 later the noise was still there. With the help and advice from this forum I listened to people who knew what they were talking about it's just a pity I didn't listen before I spent the first £300 on a repair that didn't need doing.

Grayo, You are right, it is some sort of joint at the front of the front prop, as I have just bought a new prop with it already on, I'm not sure if it's cal a CV or UJ joint but it has a rubber boot on it and I was told by a Landrover specialist that if that boot is split, it's an MOT failure and you cannot buy just the joint or boot, you have to buy the whole prop with these parts included for over £200 + fitting, which is pathetic, just for a CV boot. I guess that's why some people take the prop off, just to get it through the MOT. The noise I'm getting at speed (50-65mph) is not that loud, it's more of a bad vibration or rumbling feel and I can feel it a bit through the steering wheel but I don't think it's anything to do with wheel balance or tyres as the steering wheel is not shaking, as it would , if it was balance. The other thing I mentioned earlier was possible IRD problems (intermediate reduction drive). It's been suggested this could be worn, or on the way out, then we have the VCU, which could also be a problem, but without replacing ALL of these parts at a MASSIVE expense, as a process of elimination, I think I will have ongoing problems. I really do want to get this sorted for the bad weather around the corner, but honestly wish I could get shut of it, but I think I'm in too deep with it now, as I will NEVER recoup my money, if I sold it?
