hi my partner has a 2003 td4 freelander and she says the car starts and drives fine but the battery light is flashing , this first started yesterday when she was driving along and went over a speed hump and all the dash lights came on and the speedo and rev counter lights dimmed then everything went back to normal. since then the battery light is flashing and there no other lights on the dash coming on apart from on start up which is normal. any ideas what this could be ? thanks

since this the car wouldnt start and was just making a clicking noise then dying but would start from a jump start so i fitted a new battery and it started first turn of the key but bttery light stays on the dash, the car now starts but if you turn engine off and go to start it back up nothing but the clicking noise happens again but if left 20 mins are so it will start but now i have noticed if your driving along and put the heater on all the lights on the dash come on and it runs like a bag of crap if you turn it off the lights go back off apart from the battery light which is now on constant , on trying to turn the car over i had a friend watch the engine and he says the alternator belt wasnt turning could this be the problem?

Sounds like it is not charging, so yes a alternator issue. When you say the belt is not turning do you mean the bottom pulley is going round and the belt is slipping.

thanks for the replys its in garage 2moro so hoping thats all it is as im skint from xmas lol.

(booboodag) not to sure what he meant to be honest

In your post you said the alternator belt was not turning. As the belt goes around the alternator pulley and is driven by the crank pulley, is the crank pulley rotating as it should. Is so then it could be either the belt had broke or maybe the tensioner has failed. So may not be the alternator at fault.
If the belt is slack then be carful driving it as if the belt comes off and wraps around the crank pulley it can do some damage.

will have a check in the morning before i set off mate as its now dark , i will check the tension on the belt

Mine was doing the same after the battery light was on all the time,,
changed the plug as advised just to find its the Alternator all along...

Mine is being done tomorrow its at the garage now..:(

Check everything you can before getting an alternator as they
are not easy to get to and not cheap to get done..
