Hi,my tailgate button has worked off on for a few weeks, have shorted that
but wanted to clean the button(insides) comes out easy and can see i think how to open it up from its back but nothing shifts...Is there a knack to do this i can tell the button is S--ty as it comes pops out slower than it should, just can not get in the thing to clean it....PICs would help.. and have looked on here and can not find anything?? or on Rav.

The end cap Opposite end to the pushbutton) has to be rotated, from memory, there are a couple of lugs on it. Behind the end cap is a spring which returns the button. The interior usually gets full of crap which is drawn in by the slipstream. Make sure that the plastic grommet that fits into the hole in the tailgate is good. You can buy replacements, they are mega cheap.

Thanks irish, yes have seen what you say but the dam thing will not unscrew ? dont know if i was doing something wrong or if it is just stuck but it will not budge??

It is quite hard to shift, I had to use a pair of thin nose pliers so force was exerted on both sides. On both mine the return spring had rusted away as there is no attempt made to waterproof the insides. The rusty bits jammed everything. £40 plus for a new button 10p for a new spring if you can find one. I made mine! If the button needs replacing I plan to use a waterproof stainless commercial button if i can find one that fits the hole.:D

Thank you,yes £44 from LR... but i did get a thin knife down the button fron the outside with a cloth and lots of rusty S..t came out just wanted to give her a proper clean...with try some grippers on her failing that lot of WD40...

It will only turn one way, not sure which though my memory is not that good.

Open switch remove rusty broken spring make new spring from coat hanger fill switch housing with grease rebuild switch and bobs your uncle. Costs nothing. Did it on mine and works a treat.

Yep, works just fine. I got a spring from local wire-works, packed the inner with grease and been fine ever since....much smoother than in original condition too! ;)
