I have been looking into the options, and it seems that a dedicated, taylored to the TD4 remap or the Synergy 2 are the best options.

They say the Synergy 2 is easy to fit (although easy to fit for someone mechanically minded and easy to fit for joe ordinary are often two different things) and it is a very reasonable price. It's also easily removed and adjusted, whereas a remap is fixed.

My goal is better fuel economy. I am not bothered about increased bhp or torque as the vehicle I have is fine, and surprisingly spritely. I just want the visits to the diesel pump to be less frequent!

So what do people recommend?

Thanks in anticipation

when the new rules come in, you'll have to remove the synergy 2 for the MOT, or hide it really well. Should be fairly simple as it just plugs in and out of the loom.

remap won't cause problems with the MOT though, as long as the ecu shows no signs of tampering.

not quite sure how they're going to enforce it though.

New MOT rules??? When are they coming in then???

Could of course look for a sympathetic MOT tester!!

Isn't there a Synergy 2e available that does economy only without the increased power etc?

It looks like the new MOT rules do not apply to legitimate chips and boxes like the Synergy 2. However, I am going to ring VOSA tomorrow and discuss it with them.

I will update the forum in due course.

just disconnect when going for MOT !

not that its ever effected any of my freelanders MOT's over the years :p

not that they even look under the bonnet !

Just checking in to get the update - cheers

Well... being a man of my word... I rang VOSA.

They didn't know.

They have advised me to email their technical team. So bear with me on this one. I WILL get a definitive answer. I think it refers to commercial vehicles and not private ones, but better safe than sorry. Hippo... you are talking to a technical tard here!

need to add 2.0 to the hippo as we don't get mixed up as to which hippo we may direct our comments to

Right - I have heard back from VOSA.

"There will be quite a few changes to the MOT text next year, but checking the mapping or "chipping" of ECUs is not included. A visual check to see if the emission control equipment has been modified is included in Directive 2010/48/EU but has not been considered a valid inspection. I do not know of any future intention to include it, but that is not to say that it will not happen at some time in the future.

For information, here is the summary of the changes VOSA propose to make to the MOT test in 2012:

Continuity of towbar 13 pin electrical socket
Inappropriate towbar modifications
Gas leak detection spray
Rear passenger doors opening
All hinges, catches and pillars
Catalytic converter missing
Inappropriate brake system modifications
Defective ABS or ESC components
Battery and wiring
Power steering fluid level
Damaged or corroded power steering pipes
Engine mounts
Front and rear lights single operation
Main beam warning light
MIL for electronic power steering
warning lamp tyre pressure monitoring system
Air bag
Pre-tensioner
Driver's seat adjustment
Speedo
Headlamp cleaning and self levelling - if HID
Products on lens that reduce light output
Steering joint dust covers
Inappropriate steering repairs or mods
Steering lock stops
Steering box oil leakage
Inappropriate suspension modifications
Drive shaft support bearings and coupling gaiters."

I didn't notice any fuel economy improvement with my synergy 2 - the temptation is just there to use the power, which is there in good supply.....though mines smoked a lot when wired up to the Synergy and you booted it.

For good economy, keep it standard, well tuned/serviced and go easy on the right foot!

You may well be right there.

I have worked out my average mpg, and thus far, am achieving a very respectable 41.67mpg.

(This is based on brimming the tank, and running it to the warning light coming on (twice) so it may be slightly out, but it gives a rough idea.)

However, there are a lot of reports of the Synergy 2, where drivers are reporting significant improvements on their fuel figures... so it's got to be worth a go???
